Alane “Mamie” Tibbitts Sleight, born on November 14th, 1956, slipped peacefully into the eternities surrounded by family on the afternoon of September 14, 2020 from the effects of a rapidly advancing auto-immune disease.

Born the third child and daughter to a cattle rancher father and a homemaker mother, Alane lived an almost idyllic childhood in the picturesque backcountry of Lost River in Idaho. Absent any sons of working age for many years, her father Steve leaned on his girls to help him with his intense physical work, but Alane was more than happy to oblige. She always held precious the long rides on horseback, the delicious beef roasts, and the beautiful surroundings that defined her growing up.

Being squished in the middle of a gaggle of girls was both rewarding and challenging, but either way, Alane was determined to stand out. She discovered unique personal expression in art, with which she would illustrate the dimensions of her soul throughout the rest of her life, to the delight of family, friends, and strangers alike.

With the start of her adulthood, Alane left her family's home to hone her craft at Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho). One associate's degree later, she pressed on to BYU in Utah, and, in so doing, met a certain tall, handsome returned missionary from Georgetown, Idaho. Alane and Don married for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 29th, 1978.

Selfless sacrifice and service would become the greatest hallmarks of Alane's life. Shortly after their marriage, Alane and Don began bringing their children into the world, and those children would be some of Alane's greatest treasures. She taught each of them the beauties of the world around them, in spite of its challenges, and helped those children bear the weight of their own trials; all this while setting a marvelous example of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for her children to follow.

Alane made beautiful everything she touched, from the soil of a bed of roses to the hem of a homemade Sunday dress. Her palms were often warm, bearing a home-cooked meal for a sick friend, her fingers often pin-pricked from sewing a newborn baby’s quilt, and her heart often soaked with the tears of a grieving neighbor. God allowed her to selflessly love and serve all she knew until her physical body could no longer support her, and her time in mortality was complete.

Alane is survived by her loving husband Don Sleight, and her six children: Steven (wife Meredith), Alicia (husband Brian), Neil, Rachel, Stacey, and Emma. She is also survived by her mother, Joyce; her siblings Debra, Joy, Stephanie, Wes, and Blaine; and her grandchildren: Gabriella, Thomas, and Nora (Steven and Meredith), and Claire and Evie (Alicia and Brian). Preceding her in death is her beloved father Steven Tibbitts and her golden retriever Belle.

A public viewing will be held on Friday, September 18, 2020 from 5:00-8:00 pm at the River Ridge 9th Ward, 1409 W. Shields Lane, South Jordan, Utah, with a private viewing on Saturday from 12:00-12:45 pm.
