South Jordan, Utah
Barry J. Haycock passed away in his home in South Jordan, Utah on February 15, 2022 after an exhausting battle with Esophageal Cancer. He was 80 years old.
Barry was born on July 24, 1941 in Price, Utah, although the family home was in Spring Glen, Utah. His parents were Clifford Thomas and Ruth Edith (Wilcox) Haycock. He was the youngest of 3 children. In Utah, July 24 is Pioneer Day and Barry loved having picnics, parades and fireworks every year on his birthday!
Barry lived in Spring Glen, Utah on Haycock Lane until he was 11 years old. His father worked for the Rio Grande Railroad and in 1953 they were transferred to Grand Junction, Colorado where he lived for 48 years. He graduated from High School there and found it a wonderful place to raise his family. He made forever friends there.
Barry met Bunny Wattelet on a blind date in 1958. She was 14 years old. They dated for 3 years and married on July 29, 1961 (It was the summer between Bunny’s Jr. and Sr. year of high school) They were happily married for over 60 years. They had 3 children, Jeri, Randy, and Bryan. But there were also other children that they loved as family , some of whom lived in their home. Kelly March Campbell, Teresa Armijo (Venezuela – exchange student), Jeff McGuire (Meeker, CO) and Kimia Katsomata Brien (Japan-Georgia).
Barry served as Cub Scout Master in Grand Junction and won a large trophy for having the best and largest Cub Scout Unit in the Stake. Bunny also registered him as her assistant Girl Scout Leader for several years. He loved the girls in her Girl Scout troop and also nicknamed most of them! He was always supportive and willing to help drive the troop on their numerous adventures around the country.
Barry was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In 2001, Barry felt inspired by the Lord to move. And so, he and his wife, Bunny, moved to South Jordan, Utah. They put their trust in the Lord and left their home town, family and friends, and headed out on a new adventure. This move brought them opportunities to grow, experience great happiness, make sweet new friends, and enjoy many privileges they never thought possible. After he and Bunny moved to Utah, they served 2 missions. The first was a 2-year service mission at the Cannery in Welfare Square in SLC. The second was a full-time mission at Temple Square in SLC. There they made lasting friends and later traveled with them on a cruise to Alaska, a trip to Nauvoo, ILL, and to Branson, MO. They later hosted a Mission Reunion is SLC. He loved Sunday church meetings. He would laugh and say, “Sweet Pea, Let’s go to church today, and get saved!” He and Bunny were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 2001. They served many church callings and were on many church committees together. He served as Sunday School President twice, but the job he loved the most was Elder’s Quorum Secretary.
Barry always loved big trucks and dreamt of driving one when he grew up. So, at age 18 he went to work for a neighbor, driving an 18-wheeler. He soon realized that was not the lifestyle he wanted. In 1961 he became employed by the Colorado Department of Transportation and worked there for 32 years. After he retired, he worked seasonally for the City of Grand Junction doing street maintenance. He was a hard worker and a dependable, dedicated employee who made lifelong friends with his co-workers everywhere he went. He and Bunny set good examples for their children by budgeting carefully and prospering. His family never went without.
Barry loved to hunt deer, antelope, and pheasants. The family always had a hunting dog. He loved taking his family camping and fishing. Barry always supplemented the family budget by providing healthy meat from off the land. He loved his extended family and family reunions at Easter Camp. He loved his cars and trucks and nick-named them all! He kept them all spotless clean and in perfect running condition and taught his children and grandchildren to do the same! “Take care of what you have,” he would tell them, “And they will serve you well for a long time!” He loved his 11 grandchildren with all his heart and treasured every minute he had with them. Most of them had nicknames! And if you were Barry’s friend then you were family!
He also had a small woodshop in the back yard, Shade Tree Operations. He helped with church projects, Bunny’s Tole Painting projects, he made lots of birdhouses and airplanes.
He had a fun sense of humor and created his own vocabulary. All family members and friends understood his personal language and many of his funny comments became family favorites.
Barry was a loving husband. He was a devoted father who wholeheartedly supported his wife and children throughout their various passions and pursuits. He swelled with pride at their accomplishments in life. He was a good son and brother, and a fun-loving grandfather and uncle. He and Bunny were the ‘go to people’ if friends or family needed help. They were hard workers. They selflessly assumed the project of restoring the Haycock Family Cemetery in Spring Glen, UT. After 11 years they completed the restoration and rebuilt the original family cabin home there (ordinally built by his great grandfather in 1891) They have now turned maintenance of the cemetery over to younger members of the family. This restoration is Barry’s legacy.
Barry is survived by his daughter, Jeri Haycock of Grand Junction, CO, Randy (& Angela) Haycock of Santa Clarita, CA, and Bryan (& MaryAnn) Haycock of Herriman, UT, and his beloved brother, Clifford Elroy (& Barbara) Haycock of Glenwood Springs, He has 11 grandchildren, Katelin (& Doug) Gumfory, Jay Baron Stinecipher, Aurdy (& Michael) Degener, Andrew (Drew), Taylor, Joseph Haycock, Riley (& Michael) Cheney, Ethan, Emma, Ty, and Gracie Haycock, and one darling great grandson, Jackson. CO He is preceded in passing by his parents, Cliff & Ruth Haycock, and his sister, Ronna (Haycock) Sigler and her husband, Phil Sigler.
