“Pete”\nBernice Peterson (“Pete”) Shand passed away on March 22, 2008 surrounded by her loving family.\nBernice was born on July 8, 1923 in Ferron, Utah to Joseph Andrew Peterson and Delis Metta Lemon Peterson. Raised on the family farm she graduated from South Emory High School and completed her registered nurse’s training at Salt Lake General Hospital School of Nursing. While working at the hospital she met the love of her life, William (“Bill”) Shand. They were married April 17, 1946 and together raised three children, Bruce, Kathy and Karen, in Murray, Utah. \nShe was a nurse in several local doctors’ offices and worked for Community Nursing Services. Her skills in cooking and sewing were learned at her mother’s side with help from her older sister. “Grandma Pete” will be remembered by her grandchildren for her wonderful chocolate chip cookies and divinity. Bernice’s love of roses made her gardens a source of joy to all.\nAfter she and Bill retired to Sun City West, Mom cultivated many friends and once again began painting. Her artistic abilities even survived her Alzheimer’s as she continued to do watercolors and pencil drawings as well as sharing her “just baked chocolate chip cookies”. Pete was a kind, understanding, caring and giving person. Her passing leaves a great emptiness in our lives. \nShe is survived by her children Bruce (Kathy), Kathy Carlson (Lynn) and Karen Reid (Chris), her grandchildren, Dori (Jim Riley), Nathan (Beth), Rebecca and Robert Shand, Kent (Tia), Dan (DarLa), and Craig (Candace) Reid, great-grandson, Zakary Reid and niece, Helen Jo Bott and family. Preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother and two sisters.\nThe family will hold a private graveside service. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Mom’s life at Jenkins Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, UT on Thursday, March 27 between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. \nThe family wishes to thank the devoted staff at Christus St. Joseph’s Villa for their loving care during Mom’s stay. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Christus St. Joseph’s Villa or the Alzheimer’s Association.
