Betty left us on a beautiful summer day, June 14, 2011, at the age of 92, holding the hand of her husband of 61 years.Betty was born in Fillmore, Utah, the daughter of Nettie Lamb Nelson and Edward Nelson. She married Jewel G. Brunson, later divorced. She married LeRoy B. Allen.Betty attended Fillmore Elementary, Junior High and Millard High School. Betty moved to Salt Lake City in the 1940s and went to work at the Do Drop Inn at 39th South and State for Pete Harman. This location later became the first Kentucky Fried Chicken for Colonel Sanders.Betty rose from curb hop and punch board attendant to manager and part owner of Harman’s Café at North Temple and 3rd West where she was lovingly known as “the warden”. She retired in 1982.Betty loved to travel, especially to Wendover to find her flaming 7 slot machine. She loved gardening, crocheting, fishing, shopping, and spending time with family and her grandchildren.Betty is survived by her husband, LeRoy; daughters, Judy (Phil) Arlt, Jackie (Bruce) Hill; sister Virginia Kelly; 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren.Betty is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lillian McBride; brothers, Evan Nelson, Glen Nelson, Eddie Nelson; daughter, Jolene Wignall; one grandson and one great granddaughter.A special thanks to the dedicated care staff at Aspen Ridge West for their loving care, and Sunrise Assisted Living of Sandy’s staff and residents for providing friendships and a caring home.Viewing to be held Friday June 17th from 6-8 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So.
