Udall Robert “Bob” Bailey (1938-2024)
Bob Bailey, of South Jordan, Utah was born March 29th, 1938, and finished his fight with cancer on July 17th, 2024.
Bob was born in Nephi, Utah and was raised in South Jordan, Utah. He attended South Jordan Elementary (when it was located on 1300 West and 10400 South). The Elementary was across the street from his family farm. He attended Jordan High School where he excelled in Track and Field and acted in many plays, including “Teddy Roosevelt” in “Arsenic and Old Lace” and he won “Best Actor in State” for his role in the play “Submerged”, 1956.
As a youngster he contracted Polio, and he was a very sick young child. The disease affected his right arm and leg. That is why his success on the track surprised many individuals.
As a young man he worked hard on the family farm and dairy. He talked of getting up early and milking the cows or setting up the irrigation water, then sleeping in the furrow with his arm above his head that would feel the water when it reached the far end of the field.
After thirty-seven years of service, Bob retired from Associated Food Stores. His last position there was a non-foods buyer.
In 1962, Bob met Carma Fowles and they were married in the Manti Temple on August 31st, 1962. Their marriage was blessed with five children. They have been married for 61 beautiful years, with constant love and devotion towards each other. They were a wonderful example of love.
Bob was a Scouter. He went to the 1953 National Jamboree. He was a Scout Master for about 5 years. We believe he helped over 14 Young Men achieve the rank of Eagle. After serving as Scout Master, he became a Scouting District Commissioner. For over 20 years he volunteered for The Boy Scouts of America. He was a Silver Beaver recipient.
He served an LDS mission in northern Mexico. He always said he had the gift of tongues, because he did feel he had great Spanish skills. He had a huge testimony of Jesus Christ and the restoration of the church. He and his beautiful wife Carma also served a mission in Maribor, Slovenia.
He served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in many capacities, including Bishop, Stake High Councilor, Ward Clerk, Priesthood Quorum instructor and Seminary teacher.
Bob enjoyed playing golf, assembling golf clubs, and crafting wood walking canes from the family fruit trees. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He loved to read. In addition to reading several spy and who-done-it novels, he read the Book of Mormon annually. He loved to listen and tell stories. He could spin a yarn.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Udall Bailey and mother, Jessie Greenhalgh Bailey, sister Udean Stephens (Neil Stephens) and son-in-law Kelly Homer.
He is survived by his loving wife Carma Fowles Bailey, daughter Brenda Homer (Kelly), and sons Todd Bailey (Jeanene), Brett Bailey (Beckie), Brad Bailey (Tiffany), and Derek Bailey. Bob and Carma have found great joy in their twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He loved his family, especially his sweet wife, his country, his neighbors, and the Lord.
