Burl Young

Burl Lee Young (91) passed peacefully surrounded by family in Salt Lake City, UT on October 14, 2026. Burl was born in Monawi, Nebraska on February 7, 1935 to Clarence and Anna Mae Mitchell Young, the 6th of 10 children. His childhood was spent helping on the family ranch until he graduated from Chambers High School. After graduating, he ran a bakery until he joined the service. Burl served in the United States Air Force between 1953 and 1957. Following his military service, he returned to Nebraska to help move his family to Meridian, Idaho where he managed a grocery store. It was here that a pretty young lady, who frequented his store to get change for the dry cleaners she worked for, caught his eye. He married the young lady, Joanne Sabin, on July 2, 1959. Burl continued working in the Food industry with Johnson Lieber while in Idaho. When he was transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah he ultimately started his own Food Brokerage, Marketing Specialists, Inc. Burl was active in the Methodist Church and his community. His wife, family, and friends were his top priority and he took excellent care of them, often cooking wonderful meals for all. Burl loved cooking, gardening, music, dancing, spending time in nature, and just enjoying life. He always had a smile and hug for everyone.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Joanne Sabin Young; his children, Anita(Brad) Karren and Kathy Hale and his cherished grandchildren Amelia (Joe) Dunavan and Nicholas Karren (Children of Anita (Brad) Karren); Amanda (Don) Miller and Ashlee(John) Youngberg (Children of Kathy Hale); his great grandchildren Wren (Dunavan),Landyn and Ryann (Miller) and Matthew, Ava and Jack (Youngberg); and brothers Bill Young (Karen), Ron Young (Hazel), Clarence “Bud” Young (Trish); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
