Cary Dee Boyle – loving husband, father, brother, son, and grandfather - passed away on June 10, 2021, in Murray, Utah, from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident.
Cary was born on October 18, 1953, to Elva Louise Bartlett and Clair Dee Boyle in Salt Lake City. His parents divorced in 1963, and he lived most of his childhood with his mother and three brothers in Murray. From a young age, he was passionate about swimming and would spend hours in the pool. He worked as a lifeguard and taught swimming lessons for the YMCA and Granite School District. He graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1972. Right after graduation, he had the opportunity to swim with the U.S. Olympic swim team.
That fall, he began attending Brigham Young University on a swimming scholarship. As a member of the men’s swim team, his specialty was the butterfly. He met the love of his life, Robyn Rogers, at BYU. She was also a student at the university and lived in his apartment complex. After dating for two years, they were married for time and all eternity in the Provo Utah Temple on August 20, 1976.
Cary graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1982. He spent more than 35 years working for Utah Power & Light. He initially worked as a meter reader in Ogden, Utah. He later took a position as an accountant in the Rexburg, Idaho branch. The family lived in Idaho for 16 years before Cary was transferred to Pacific-Corp in Portland, Oregon, where he worked as a senior account specialist. Cary retired from the company in 2018 and, after 18 wonderful years in Vancouver, Washington, moved to Utah to be closer to family.
Cary was a faithful and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in several organizations within the Church, including the primary, young men’s, elder’s quorum, high priests, and in a bishopric. He loved the youth of the church and volunteered to teach early morning seminary for several years in Vancouver. Most recently, Cary and Robyn served a full-time, two-year mission for the church in Halifax and Montreal, Canada. Working in the mission’s main office, they got to know and love all of the missionaries, and the missionaries loved them.
During their nearly 45 years of marriage, they had five children and 12 grandchildren. His family was his life and he loved nothing more than spending time with his wife, as well as each one of his kids and grandkids. You could always find him supporting them at sporting events, concerts, dance recitals, and church activities. Every time he left to go home, he would be sure to ask his grandchildren, “Who does Grandpa love?” His grandkids would each be quick to respond, “Me!” A kid at heart, the neighborhood kids loved him and would often come down to visit Cary and Robyn. They would always leave with some kind of sucker or other treat.
Cary spent his whole life serving and would be willing to give anything to anyone. He would often be found working in someone’s yard, whether it was mowing a lawn, shoveling snow, or doing anything else that needed done. He was dependable, kind, and selfless, which is why it is fitting that his last act in this life was to donate his kidneys to someone in need.
He enjoyed being outside and working in his yard. He loved to swim and bike, and at the time of his passing, was preparing to compete in swimming and biking races later this summer. In the last year of his life, he found a lot of joy and satisfaction working side-by-side with his brother Scott as they worked to restore Robyn’s 1964 ½ Mustang. They were able to get it restored and running just a few weeks before he died.
Cary is preceded in death by his mother, Elva, and a half-brother, Gary. He is survived by his wife, Robyn, five children, Kris (Cami) of Pleasant Grove; Nick (Kristin) of Bluffdale; Cameron (Tiffany) of Saratoga Springs; Ashley (Jonny) of Bluffdale; and Chase (Shyla) of Omaha, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren (Jordan, McKennah, Joseph, Makennly, Tucker, Tenley, Mason, Charley, Brexley, Evelyn, Kaden, and Cooper); his father, Clair, and step-mother, Judy; three brothers, Bruce, Scott, and Mike; three half-brothers, Jason, Shane, and Brandon; and four half-sisters, Judy, Jennifer, Tara, and Dana.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1174 S. 1700 West in Lehi. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 15, from 6-8 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 S), South Jordan, Utah. There will also be a visitation at the church in Lehi, immediately before the funeral, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. The funeral will be streamed live and can be viewed by visiting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m2YO--HGbU.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the many acts of kindness shown to them during this difficult time and for the wonderful care our husband, father, and grandfather received from the Murray IHC medical staff. The family also encourages anyone interested in honoring Cary to consider completing an act of service or making a donation to the humanitarian or missionary departments of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
