C. Roland Clements Obituary (1934 - 2012)

Roland died 31 October, 2012, at age 78 while he was a resident at the Utah State Veteran’s Nursing Home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He had spent the last 4 years and 8 months of his life there, and was cared for with compassion and excellence by the staff. His dementia made communication in the usual manner next to impossible, but they found ways to convey their love and caring to him. They were unfailingly kind and compassionate to family members and his friends as well. Roland (as he was known to all) was born 23 June 1934 in Salt Lake City to Charlie Leslie and Marjorie Bush Clements. He grew up in the area of Alden Street in Sugarhouse and attended public schools there, graduating from South High School where he was active in the A Capella choir and band. He attended the University of Utah and graduated with a business degree. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Australia. His military service was with the Air Force and the Air Force Reserves where he served for six years. His marriage to Marilyn Morrison produced six wonderful children: Leslie, Carrie (Jared) Davidson, Stan (Tarra), David (Jill) Douglas (Sonia), and Stephen (Amy). These in turn gave him 18 beloved grandchildren. The marriage ended. Roland is survived by all his children and Karen Clements, his wife of the last 14 years. He was a lifelong member of the LDS Church and held many positions including high priest group leadership, bishopric, ward clerk, Young Men’s program, scoutmaster and various teaching assignments. He sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for 22 years. The greatest loves of his life were family, church and music. His work life included 26 years with IBM and time with Kodak, Merrill Lynch, and several others. He was an excellent salesman and enjoyed his work immensely. He enjoyed his leisure life as well and was an avid skier, hiker, boater and water skier. He taught all his children to enjoy these things as a family. Gardening was another activity he enjoyed. He loved animals and had numerous house pets. He made many friends in all activities of his life and was a person who loved to be with people and was good at making people laugh. Anyone who was a stranger to him didn’t remain a stranger very long. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray. Viewings will be held Friday, November 9, 2012 from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
