Darlene Schow Voorhees Obituary (1931 - 2010)

Darlene Schow Voorhees, beloved wife and mother passed away on August 20, 2010 of causes incident to age. The youngest of 12 children, she was born in Salt Lake City on October 6, 1931 to John and Johanna Schow. Darlene grew up in the Avenues, graduated from West High School and later attended the University of Utah. A beautiful young lady, she caught the eye of her best friend and eternal companion, Don Voorhees, who were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 29, 1951. Darlene’s family was first and foremost in her life. Besides providing a wonderful home for Don and the children, she enjoyed keeping an immaculate flower garden and was a wonderful cook. She was thrilled to be recognized by Denver’s Rocky Mountain News as “The Best Cook in the West”. Darlene loved reading good books and instilled in her children the love of reading. Rarely did a birthday or Christmas go by when a book wasn’t included in her gift. She liked making quilts for family members and for those in need. She enjoyed serving others and volunteered for 15 years at the Porter Memorial Hospital in Denver, Colorado in various capacities – comforting the sick and their families were her favorite. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she enriched the lives of countless others in many service opportunities. She served for 20 years in the Primary as a teacher and President, and as Relief Society President. Among her favorite callings were serving as a co-chair of the Denver Colorado Temple preparation committee and as a missionary in the Church History Museum in Salt Lake City. Recently, she served with Don as the co-chair of her Ward’s “Empty Nester Group” providing high-quality Family Home Evenings for ward members. Darlene was kind and friendly to all. Compassionate service came easily for her and she helped many without seeking recognition for herself. She was loved by all for her sweet disposition. Darlene is survived by her husband, Don, sons Gordon (Pam) of Littleton, CO, Tom of Sioux Falls, SD, Jeff (MaryEllen) of Toquerville, UT, a daughter Sheree Green (Scott) of South Jordan, UT, and a brother Gordon Schow (Jeannie) of Salt Lake City. She was blessed with 17 grand children and 12 great-grand children. Services at 10:00 am, Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Cottonwood Creek Stake Center 1535 E. Creek Road, Sandy, Utah. Viewings are set for 7:00 – 8:30 pm, Tuesday evening, August 24, 2010 at the Jenkins – Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S. State Street, Murray, Utah, and again before the services from 9:00-10:00 am at the church. Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm at the Manti City Cemetery, Manti, Utah. Flowers may be sent to the Jenkins – Soffe Mortuary. The family expresses gratitude to the management and staff of the Care Source Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
