Diane Cheryl Ririe Marshall, 87, our wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed peacefully from this life into the next on October 21, 2026, in Riverton, Utah, and returned to our loving Heavenly Father.
Diane was born on December 20, 1938, in Ogden, Utah, to Floyd and Bernice Ririe, the youngest of five children. As the youngest, she often said she was always picked on. Still, the scales of justice balanced out: she was the only child who got to go to Hawaii with her parents.
Her early years were spent on the move. Her father was a pilot during World War II, and when he was transferred to Alaska, the family spent several years in Canada. There Diane learned a completely different way of doing math. She always got the right answer, but her methods looked unusual to her own children, who learned not to argue with results.
The family eventually settled in the Sugar House area, and Diane graduated from East High School. That's where she met her future husband, Courtland, when he offered to "buy" her a drink at the drinking fountain. What started as a small joke became an eternal marriage, eight children, and a lifetime of joys and challenges. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on March 21, 1958. It may be the best return anyone has ever obtained from a free drink.
Diane and Courtland lived in Granger for many years before settling in South Jordan. Their Granger years brought lifelong friendships that stayed an important part of their lives.
Diane had a deep love for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a firm believer in and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. She served in many ward and stake callings, including leadership roles in Young Women and Relief Society, as well as Sunday School. She also served as a substitute seminary teacher.
Diane loved to dance and sing. She competed in dance and in several beauty pageants, and one year she sang with a young mothers' choir in the Tabernacle. She loved to read, and she had a deep love for her country. She wanted her children to appreciate the blessing of living in America and the value of family. Being together to celebrate our freedom and one another became a cherished family tradition.
Diane was strict and driven, as her eight children can attest. She was also the heart of the family's gatherings. Once a month she hosted Birthday (homemade Ice Cream) Sunday, honoring every child and grandchild with a birthday that month. If reality TV had existed back then, those gatherings would have had their own show. Many family jokes were born there and retold, growing larger with each telling. Along with water-skiing Thursdays, and Grandparents Day, they are some of our most treasured memories.
In her later years, health challenges limited her body and mind. Even so, she kept persevering through the pain. She tried to keep a smile on her face and to share a kind word with those around her.
Above all, Diane leaves a legacy of family, faith, love, and cherished memories. Her family will always treasure the stories, laughter, and moments we shared with her.
Diane is survived by her children: Michelle Oakeson, Camille (Jeffre y) Jensen, Leslie (Ryan) Orullian, Stacie (Jon) Bready, Mark (Kristine) Marshall, Taunya (Phillip) Hanney, Bryce (Saidi) Marshall, and Brooke (Craig) Feustel. She is also survived by 33 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren, with four more on the way; three great-great-grandchildren; and her brother, Bruce Ririe.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Courtland; her parents, Floyd and Bernice Ririe; her brother, Kenny Ririe; and her sisters, Janice Kunz and Karen Liddell.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Beehive Homes in Riverton for the loving care they gave our mother. We are also grateful to Canyon Home Care and Hospice for their compassion and support in caring for Diane.
Diane will be deeply missed and forever loved by her family and by everyone whose life she touched.
Although this photo was taken many years ago, it captures the spirit of the mother we knew; she was full of life, love, and a little mischief. This is how we choose to remember her.
