"Kay"
Born Sept. 4, 1917 in Moore, Butte, Idaho to William Neuman Patten and Maude Rebecca Kidd; the 5th of 8 children. Kay lived during the Great Depression and had many challenges and hardships in her life. When she was 12 years old her mother passed away. Then, at the beginning of her 9th grade in school, she was run over by a car. Although this accident ended her formal education and caused her much pain throughout her life, she loved to read and became self-educated. Kay was involved in plays and dramatic readings and delighted in old movies. In later years when her eyesight was too poor to read, she listened to books on tape and said she was "cramming for finals."
Kay met Lorenzo Elmer Whiting at a church dance, and they married on Sept 14, 1937 in the LDS temple in Logan, Utah. They had four children. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had fond memories of serving the young women in her stake. Kay learned the skills of canning, preparing frugal meals, and gardening (she had a "green thumb" and loved houseplants, especially African Violets). She took pleasure in crafts such as sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroidery, ceramics, macramé and beading. She also enjoyed taking care of chickens, except for the time her young grandson obediently locked the door of the chicken coop (as she had taught him to do) accidently locking her inside.
Her beloved husband died June 5, 1984 of a heart attack during the last week of their LDS mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. Kay was a woman with a strong will and great faith and testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and was interested in family history. She treasured her family and would often say, "Have a good day dear, and know you are loved!" Because she was so independent, it was hard for Kay to let others serve her as her health declined.
Kay looked forward to a joyful reunion with Elmer and others who preceded her through the veil. She passed away peacefully at age 95, early in the morning of March 14, 2013. The family appreciates the care given by Brighton House and IHC Hospice in her final year.
Survived by children: Carvel (Betty) Whiting, Leon (Ellen) Whiting, Marva (Sam) Rogers, and David (Hallie) Whiting; 28 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild.
A viewing will be held 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23rd at the Butler West Stake Center 1845 East 7200 South, Salt Lake City, Utah, under the direction of Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah.
