Edythe Sorensen

–

Murray, Utah

Edythe Rae Robbins Tollstrup Sorensen passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Edythe was born on April 12, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Burtis France Robbins, M.D., and Edythe Lovena Christenson. She was raised alongside her sister and lifelong best friend, Francine, as well as her brother Burtis (“Bud”) and sisters Elaine and Joanne.

Edythe grew up in the lower Avenues of Salt Lake City before her family later moved to East South Temple. She spent her summers at the family farm in East Millcreek. At the age of seven, she began violin studies at the McCune School of Music, where she trained for ten years and became Concert Master of the McCune Senior Symphony. During her junior and senior years, she performed violin recitals at the University of Utah, accompanied by Alexander Schreiner. Edythe graduated from East High School. Following graduation, she joined the Utah State Symphony under Hans Heniett.

At the age of 17, Edythe auditioned for and was accepted into the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under renowned violinist Mischa Mischakoff, Concert Master of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini. While living in New York, she enjoyed active participation in her church community and performed in numerous concerts. Upon returning to Utah, she re-auditioned with the Utah Symphony under Maurice Abravanel and was placed in the First Violin section, performing both locally and on tour.

On March 20, 1950, Edythe married Keith Ross Tollstrup in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they built a life centered on family, music, and faith. They first lived on Millcreek Road before moving to Cottonwood, where they raised their four children and enjoyed many years surrounded by horses, chickens, and the beauty of country living. Following Keith’s passing in 1986, Edythe moved to her condominium in Brookstone.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Edythe served faithfully in numerous callings throughout her life. Her service included Young Women’s President, Relief Society President, and many others. She shared her musical gifts generously, producing and directing stake musical productions, conducting choirs, and performing many violin solos.

Edythe taught violin for 34 years, mentoring students of all levels. Several of her students went on to perform with orchestras in Salt Lake City. She also performed extensively with the Jay Welch Chorale and Orchestra as Associate Concert Master.

Edythe had a deep love for travel and adventure. She explored much of the United States, Europe, and Asia. Among her most cherished places was the family cabin in Logan Canyon, where generations gathered and countless memories were made.

On September 27, 2004, Edythe married Elder Lynn A. Sorensen. Together they shared twelve wonderful years before his passing.

Edythe is survived by her four children: Kathy Lynn Sharp, Shauna Jeanne Abbatiello, David Reese Tollstrup (Susie), and Gina Marie Mackay; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Edythe loved the Savior and lived a life defined by faith, kindness, service, and quiet strength. She was always ready to help those in need and uplift those around her.

The family would like to thank all the friends, neighbors, caregivers, and all those who ministered to her throughout the years.
