Eleanore Kartchner

–

Battle Ground, Washington

Eleanore Susan (Rosenberg) Kartchner, beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026, in Battle Ground, Washington, at the age of 91.

Born on May 25, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Eleanore was the youngest daughter of German immigrants, Max Friedrich Rosenberg and Martha Anna Maria Sandmann. She grew up alongside her two older sisters, Ruth Hooks and Gerda Harlacker. From her parents, she inherited a deep appreciation for hard work, integrity, and family ties that guided her throughout her life.

On April 7, 1955, she married the love of her life, Don Marlo Kartchner, in the Salt Lake City Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, they raised 6 children; 4 boys and 2 girls. Eleanore was preceded in death by her beloved husband Don Marlo, her parents, Max and Martha, and her sisters, Ruth and Gerda. Her family takes great comfort in knowing they are reunited once more. She loved the Church and remained faithful to her beliefs in Jesus Christ and a glorious resurrection until the day she died. We are sure there were joyful reunions on the other side.

Her greatest joy was her family, whom she nurtured with all her heart. Eleanore’s remarkable legacy lives on through her six children and their families: Kerry (Britt) Kartchner, Roddy (Wendi) Kartchner, Denny (Patricia) Kartchner, Alana Knutson, Lance (Kathleen) Kartchner, and Sheri (Sam) Carmichael, as well as thirty-two grandchildren and forty-eight great-grandchildren. She shared a legacy of having an open and welcoming home. There were frequent guests for dinners and even welcoming a brother into our home and family from a Samoan/Hawaiian heritage, Tracy Spencer. He was a California boy with deep Polynesian roots who became part of the family.

In her young married life she received training and certifications in secretarial work. She became fluent in Short Hand and other office skills. She was able to leverage these skills at various times in her life to help support the family. She had also a licensed real estate agent. But, her true joy was being home to raise her 6 children.

Eleanore will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her warmth, and the selfless service and care she gave to everyone. She will also be remembered for her wit and sass. She loved to plant and nurture gardens. She and Don Marlo lived in many homes throughout their marriage. Each one she would turn into a home for the family and it usually ended up with gardens and lots of trees. They lived in homes from the Western United States (California, Oregon and Washington) across the USA to Connecticut and New York and across the ocean to The Netherlands and Belgium. Highlights include years spent in Europe while Don was on assignment in his career. Perhaps the most gritty responsibility she had was raising 4 boys and a girl on a dairy farm in upstate New York. While there the family was blessed with the birth of a 2nd girl (Sheri). In the end she helped establish homes in more than 17 locations across the US and Europe.

Her later years were spent caring for Don Marlo as his health declined, while living with their son Denny and his wife Patty, who provided a loving, comfortable, and supportive home and environment for both of them. While in their home, Eleanore painstakingly compiled and published a rich history of her father, Max Rosenberg, and his relatives, which now serves as a lasting source of family history and inspiration. The family is eternally mindful of and grateful to Denny and Patty for their selfless devotion to and care for our parents/grandparents through many years of family life, gospel learning, and genealogical work.
