Fredrick Sam Howa, age 76 of West Jordan, UT passed away peacefully Monday, October 16, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on July 4, 1947, in Salt Lake City Utah to Lebanese emigrants Sam and Mariam Howa. Fred graduated from West High School and shortly after he joined the U.S. Army to serve his country as a communications specialist in the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge in 1968, he followed the path of his father and brothers, and started a 30+ year career with Kennecott Copper. Fred was passionate about worker’s rights and served as a Union Leader as well as the treasurer for the Workmen's Benefit Association well into his retirement. After his retirement from Kennecott, he worked for the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department until he retired again in 2013.\n\nFred married Rebecca Lee Leonhardt in 1970, where they established their roots in West Valley and were blessed with five children. As a father, he instilled his values of integrity, hard work, and kindness which have left an indelible mark on our hearts. He reveled in family gatherings and enjoyed spending time and creating memories with those who he held dear.\n\nFred enjoyed numerous hobbies including jewelry making, coin collecting, hunting, welding, woodworking, tinkering or just napping in his office chair. His humorous wit gave rise to laughter and smiles, though he often found himself at the brunt of many jokes. He will be dearly missed by his extended family and friends to whom he held in great regard. \n\nFred was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sister, and two sons, Shawn Howa and Sherid Howa.\n\nHe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beckie Howa; children, Shayne (Melissa) Howa, Shannon (Aaron) Howa, Sheldon; grandchildren, Shawn (Cindy) Howa, Landon (Kat) Howa, Kylee, Quentin, Emma, Wyatt, Morgan (Cody) McKendrick, Kayden (Miranda) Howa; great grandchildren, Svea, Tatum, Charlie, Treysten, Rhaylee, Brixley.\n\nA viewing will be held on October 25, 2023, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with funeral service from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapel located at 1007 W South Jordan Parkway. Graveside services will be held thereafter at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery located at 275 U Street in Salt Lake City.
