Our extraordinary and loving mother and grandmother, Gae Lyn DeLand, died peacefully on Friday November 4, 2016. Gae Lyn had a huge heart and generous spirit and was always there for anyone in need. She was the primary caretaker for her mother who passed away in May of this year. Just a month later she was given less than a year to live.
Gae Lyn was born September 1, 1941 in Annis Idaho to Walter Ernest DeLand and Wilma Fisher DeLand. She was the second of four children.
Gae Lyn attended Highland High School where she met a wonderful group of friends with whom she has maintained a very special friendship all these years. Gae Lyn then attended the Church College of Hawaii where she fell in love with the beauty, culture, and aloha of the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaii always held a special place in her heart.
In 1962, Gae Lyn became a flight attendant for Western Airlines where she flew for 8 ½ years. Some years later Gae Lyn started working with computers where she earned a national reputation and was elected President of a national computer organization. That was followed by serving as Director of the I.T. Bureau for the Utah State Department of Corrections. While there she served on numerous national committees, created the computer system that tracks and maintains records on Utah's criminal population for which she won a Governor's Award, and greatly improved the operation of the Bureau. Gae Lyn then retired to devote her time to her family.
Gae Lyn was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and she always loved serving others.
Gae Lyn is survived by her daughter, Allison Taylor (Robert); grandchildren, Alyssa, Kailina, Jordan, and Sierra; step grandson, Stephen (Hallie) and step granddaughter, Ashlee (Josh); three great-grandchildren; and her brothers, Gary DeLand (Kathy) and Loni DeLand (Denise). Gae Lyn was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Lisa.
