Gayla June Memmott Corn passed away peacefully on December 12, 2023, surrounded by her daughters and granddaughters after suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Gayla was born on June 2, 1942, in Scipio, Utah to Seymour and Alice Memmott. She moved to Salt Lake City when she was 11 to a cute little house in Sugarhouse on View Street that was built by her dad. She met the love of her life, Dave, at the age of 18. They dated for 7 years before marrying on May 10, 1968, in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly after, they moved to Idaho where they had 3 beautiful daughters. They returned to the Salt Lake area in 1979 and have lived there ever since. Gayla is survived by her daughters, Amy Morley (Clint) and Lezlie Corn (Shawn), her 7 precious grandchildren, Taelor (Cade), Madison (Brennan), Hannah, Grace, Isabel, Olivia and Kaden and 2 great-grandchildren, Skylar (6) and Charley (1). She is preceded in death by her love, David, and her sweet daughter, Sydne. Her family takes comfort in knowing that they have been reunited. Gayla was a proud member of the LDS church and devoted her life to its teachings. Gayla was loving and nurturing and was a spitfire when she needed to be. She loved to be with her family. She LOVED being a grandma and she truly was the best GMA around! She loved doing crafts with her grandkids, cooking big Sunday dinners, and knitting and crocheting. She was artistic, had beautiful handwriting, and was good at almost everything she did. If she was out shopping and discovered something she liked, she was often known to say ‘oh, I could make that’, and then she would! She could recreate recipes by taste alone. Gayla always looked her best, and had the cutest outfits, jewelry and hair. She was always put together. Gayla enjoyed playing canasta every Friday with her siblings, but most of all, she loved to win! She loved her family, and her family loves her more than words can express. We will miss her so much.
We want to extend a very special thank you to the people at Applegate Hospice, specifically her hospice nurse, Annalie and her Chaplin, Jewels. While our time with you was short, you both showed so much compassion and care for our mom and our family and we will be forever grateful.
Following are messages from each of her grandchildren:
My husband Cade and I got to live with my grandparents the first year we were married. I remember coming home one night after a hard day. I went upstairs and sat on the couch next to my grandma, and she just tickled my back and told me how proud she was of me. She had so much comfort and love to give. She was the best grandma and great-grandma, and she loved my kids. My daughter Skylar’s favorite things to do with her were to play guess the shape with playdoh or read “There’s A Mouse About the House”. We’re going to miss our Grandma Gayla Corn.
Love, Taelor
My sweet Grandma Gayla Corn had a gentle spirit that touched every moment we shared. Whether it was the sweet aroma of fudge filling the kitchen, the comforting touch of her hands styling my hair, or the joy of shared shopping excursions, these precious memories are etched in my heart. Grandma, you not only shared your love for family but also passed on your petite stature, making us forever connected in height and shoe size. Finding comfort in the knowledge that you have joined my mom, Sydne and my grandpa, Dave in heaven, I picture them together once more. I love and admire you so much. Your love forever stays in my heart.
Love, Maddie
It would be difficult to name the many things that I admire and will miss about my grandma. Her love of family history and genealogy, her trendy fashion sense, her pranks and sassy sense of humor, her cutthroat sensibility when it came to game night, her dedication to her family and her faith, her love of butter and baking, and her ability to make the simplest tasks creative and fun are just a few. What I will most miss about my grandma Gayla Corn, though, is how it felt to be around her. Nothing could bring more comfort than a squeeze from her beautiful and tiny hands, hearing her hum a children’s rhyme, helping her to make her special candy, or listening to a story about her and my grandpa Dave. Though my world will feel a little empty without her, my life has been filled with so much love, warmth, and kindness because of her. I will forever be grateful for her and the immense impact that she has had on my life.

One of life’s biggest fortunes is finding the people that feel like home. My grandma Gayla was exactly that. She was warm when life felt cold, strong when life felt hard, and funny when life felt sad. There are so many parts of myself that can be traced right back to her- whether it’s taking on a new craft project, tasting my way through recipes to make them “mine”, or hitting HomeGoods to hunt for a deal. She knew how to make just about anything better, and created a space where creativity could flourish. There will seldom be a day where I won’t think of and miss her witty quips and pranks, or wish I could give her a quick call to ask just what color her cherished pecan brittle was supposed to be when it was ready to pour. Grandma, thank you for making it just so hard to live without you, I love you.
Your G partner forever, Gracie Girl
My grandmother was the most caring, loving, kind, and giving person. She made sure to make every day with her grandkids full of fun and anything that our imaginations could think up. She was such a crafty person with her baking, sewing, gak and play dough. I don’t think there was anything that my grandma couldn’t fix or make... or just make better. Not to mention she helped me find my love for baking and showed me what a perfectly baked cookie or pie can do for the people you love and others. She always made it a point to make sure all the people in her life felt loved and wanted. It was such a privilege to be able to call her grandma. Every time I hear you are my sunshine; I won’t be able to think of anything or anyone else but you. I love you more than you know Grammy.
Love, Izzy
Gram - Oh how I miss you already. Not only were you the best wife, mother, and grandmother to us all, you were my best friend, supporter, guide, and roommate. I am beyond grateful to have spent the final two years of your life right by your side. Whether it was fashion points, heartbreak hugs, or witty jokes, you were always there to give them. The unwavering support you have given me will be cherished forever. The endless love for everyone you crossed paths with is truly admirable. I look up to the life you created for yourself and for us. Your devotion and unbreakable love for your siblings, husband, children, grandchildren, and friends will always remain a guiding light. I will forever be grateful for the loving environment and strong bond you have left between us all. You are and were the magnet that has kept that bond strong. Although you're not physically here, I still feel your spirit nudging me forward. I love you forever, Gram.

My grandma was the best grandma anyone could ever have. Whenever I look back at the times we spent together when I was young, she was always making me happy with fun things to do. And her cooking was always the top of the top from making the most delicious peanut butter jelly sandwiches to the most amazing lasagna which was my favorite dish. Her cooking always brought us together as a family on Sundays after church. When I was a small kid, she would always comfort me when I was pouting or throwing a fit by giving me scratches on my neck and back and talking with me to calm me down. I remember her always putting others before herself. Her kindness and actions painted a portrait of the kind of beautiful person she was. I will remember you forever grandma in my heart. Love you grandma Thank you for making me the happiest boy alive; Rest in paradise.
