Geraldine Golden Winters

–

South Jordan, UT

Our loving mother, grandmother, wife and friend, Gerry Winters, age 82, passed away October 16, 2017 from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. She was born January 4, 1935 in Los Angeles, CA to Glen Golden and Ida Bair. She spent her childhood years in South Salt Lake and later moved to Pleasant Grove to live with her beloved grandmother, “Mimmie”, making lasting friends and cherished memories. It was there she met and married the love of her life, Alden Q. Winters. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple September 10, 1953.

In 1959 they moved to South Jordan where they raised their 7 children, building two homes and making life-long friendships. Gerry was a beloved member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and her life reflected a deep testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel. She willingly served in various callings and many were touched by her deep compassion. She loved being of service to others which led her to pursue a degree in nursing while also raising a large family. She enjoyed her employment at Cottonwood Hospital and the Holladay Clinic with Dr. Burt Green and Dr. William McCaa before retiring at the age of 67.

Gerry would say her greatest accomplishments were her children and grandchildren. She loved gathering her family for s’mores in the backyard, sleepovers which always included pancakes in any requested shape. She loved baking and was famous for her Cinnamon Roll Thursdays, Halloween sugar cookies and homemade bread and jam. Her hobbies included monthly “club” with the girls, reading, gardening and homemade crafts – her talents were endless.

Gerry was a loving caretaker to her husband, Alden, until his passing in 2009. It was around this time she began her courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She married Larry L. Bailey February 27, 2010 and was lovingly accepted into his family. Larry and Gerry were able to serve a LDS mission at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. She also served in the Jordan River temple before her health declined.
Survived by her children Mike (Kaye); Susan Crandall (Robert); Julie Hammond (Todd); Mark (Jody), Jon (Jolene), Rebecca Brown Hibbard (Jim), Holly Saunders (Bruce); 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; sisters, Colleen Winther and Patricia Weber: brother, David Gamingasco; husband, Larry Bailey. Preceded in death by her first husband, Alden; her parents; sister, Joy Palmer Smart; granddaughter, Amanda Rose Garcia; grandson, Tyson Brown.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the many caregivers at Pheasant Run Alzheimer’s Special Care Center with special thanks to “friend” Janessa. Words cannot express our gratitude for your tender care of our mother.
