Glenn Eldon Johns – 1951–2022

Glenn Eldon Johns was born December 26, 1951, in Hayward, California, to Eugene Clyde and Afton Hallows Johns. Glenn is the eldest of five children (Garth, Susan, Steven, and Brian). Glenn grew up in Hayward and graduated from Mt. Eden High in 1970. He and his friend Ron were the first two to make Eagle Scout in their ward. He loved spending time at the beach and surfing growing up.

He attended Chabot College for a year prior to enlisting in the Air Force May 19, 1971. In the Air Force he excelled in electronics and became an avionics communications specialist maintaining and repairing radios.

On March 11, 1972 he married Deborah Evans. They had three children, Jason, Gabe, and Greg. After their divorce, Glenn moved to Utah and on July 14, 2004, he married Dorothy Elggren. After their marriage, they moved to Rose Canyon where they built a home together. They loved the peacefulness and beauty of the canyon.

He served in Thailand at Korat Air Force Base from July, 1973 to May 1974 during the Vietnam War. Glenn then took extended service abroad and was stationed at Mildenhall Air Force Base in England from October 1976 to July 1980 in avionics maintenance. He then moved into the airborne environment as an airborne communications maintenance technician on a flying command post at Langley Air Base in Virginia. He loved this assignment and remained there for 14 years. During his time in Virginia, he learned the art of boat-building and loved sailing. He retired from the Air Force February 25, 1993 and worked in various fields prior to becoming a self-employed general contractor.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in many callings including branch president, counselor in branch presidency and bishopric, as well as many other callings. He loved the Savior and the gospel.

Glenn loved woodworking, gardening, landscaping, and was an avid reader. He had many interests and he always had many projects going, and said that they would keep him busy for the next 20 years.

Glenn died peacefully at home on October 9, 2022 after a year-long battle with heart failure. He was an eternal optimist and reminded us that “Life is Good,” even at the end.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his sons, Jason, Gabe (Des), and Greg; sister Susan, brothers Garth, Steven (Marcia) and Brian (Mary), along with four grandchildren.
