Salt Lake City, UT
Grant A. Ashby was born in Delta, Utah to Charles A. and Martha Prosser Ashby. He passed away with family at his side. He married his sweetheart, Dora Ileen Roderick, on April 18, 1938; later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Dora preceded him in death in 2009.
Grant was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he served as a temple worker with his beautiful wife. He was a self-taught master mechanic who could fix anything because of his ability to "think outside of the box."
There was no challenge too great. He made special tools to fix cars when available tools were not adequate. He taught a blind person how to "rivet" at Lockheed Aircraft during the War. He taught his three sons to work on their cars, and he and they loved the time together. He was very independent, and rather than ask for help with a two or three person task, he would use his ingenuity to find a way to do it himself. He was quick-witted and spontaneous and would break into song or dance with his grandchildren and family when least expected. He loved to take the opposite view on any topic, causing the other party to justify their view. He and his wife loved to take drives and ride snowmobiles. His family will miss his strong handshake, heart of gold, and willingness to help anyone in need at anytime.
The family expresses their gratitude to Gentiva Hospice Care and Staff—with a special thanks to Brooke Tamby, Dad's primary care nurse. Thanks also to all of the good neighbors and ward members for their help through the last few years.
He is survived by sons, Rod (Jeanne) Ashby and Gary (Pat) Ashby; 15 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife; and son, Grant G. (Jane) Ashby.
