Joe Anne Paul Van Leeuwen Moore Obituary (1930 - 2014)

Joe Anne Paul Van Leeuwen Moore, 84, died December 16, 2014, at her home in South Jordan, Utah. Born July 2, 1930, in Salt Lake City to Spencer Paul and LaPrele Terry Paul, she always had great stories about growing up in Sugar House near the old penitentiary, friends on Hollywood Avenue, and taking the trolley downtown. Her parents divorced and her mother LaPrele married Joseph Finocchio, who was a loving stepfather. Joe Anne graduated from South High School in 1947 and married Ray Van Leeuwen in 1948. They had four sons; Kirk, Paul (deceased), Spencer and Joel Van Leeuwen. They divorced in 1960. Joe Anne raised her boys near the mouth of the Mill Creek canyon where she enjoyed living among friends for more than 40 years. She took jobs at Walker Bank and then ZCMI, working her way from clerk, cashier, manager, and finally buyer, a job that would take her to New York several times each year. Joe Anne loved to shop, especially when she could find a deal. In 1964 Joe Anne married John Moore. He had three sons: Preston, Richard, and Craig Moore. Together John and Joe Anne had two more sons: David and Michael Moore. John was a caring and devoted husband and together they enjoyed time with their family. John died of cancer in 1987. Joe Anne had a green thumb, spending hours in her beautiful gardens, and serving a gardening mission on Temple Square. She loved to tole paint with friends, turning cribs and toy chests into works of art. Many free summer weekends were spent gathered with family and friends at a shared cabin in Holliday Park in the Uintah Mountains, a place she called "God's country." Joe Anne was active in the LDS Church, serving in Young Women, Relief Society, and many other callings. She loved watching college football, basketball, and soccer, especially with children and grandchildren. Joe Anne loved people and had the gift of making friends. In 2000 she moved near the Jordan River Temple where she enjoyed serving as a temple worker. Above all Joe Anne was a disciple of Jesus Christ. She loved the scriptures, rarely missing a day of personal study; she loved to share what she'd learned at church, and opportunities to be in the temple. She was anxious that her children and grandchildren know of her conviction of the restored gospel. She is survived by Kirk (Francie), Spencer (Deborah), and Joel Van Leeuwen; David (Nichole), Michael (Nancy), Preston (Sherlyn), Richard (Jean), and Craig (Jody) Moore; her sister Barbara Christensen; 34 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and too many friends to count. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her son Paul, her parents and stepfather. A special thanks to Suzie, Angela, and many others from Intermountain Hospice who provided loving care. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 22, 2014 at 1 p.m. in the Oquirrh Lake Stake Center, 4517 Mille Lacs Drive, South Jordan. A viewing will be held Sunday, December 21 from 5-7 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway, (10600 So.) and on Monday from 11-12:30 at the church prior to services.
