John S. (Jack) Gleason

–

Murray, UT

John S. (Jack) Gleason passed away peacefully at his son's home on August 17, 2015. Dad was 91 and ready to go. One more of the Greatest Generation has left us. Jack was born on January 7, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John S. Gleason and Leona Christensen. He grew up in Bingham and was active in sports where he was a member of the Bingham High All-State Football Championship team of 1941. He graduated from Bingham High School in 1942. We were told many stories about his years growing up in Bingham Canyon. He met and courted Maurine Jensen during high school. Their marriage in 1943 was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. John enlisted in the Navy in 1944 during World War II and was immediately sent to the Pacific theater. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat. He returned home to raise his family and supported them as a Letter Carrier with the U.S. Postal service. He enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He really enjoyed golfing and made many friends on the golf course. Dad had a sense of humor right up to the end. Right now he is talking and laughing with some of his golfing friends. In later years he enjoyed attending the LDS temple with his beloved Maurine. Jack loved his family and he dearly loved Maurine. He is survived by Maurine, his wife of more than 70 years, 5 children, Jack Gleason (Jan), Michael Gleason (Vee), Marcia Holman, Cheryl Burton (Andy), Gordon Gleason, his sister – Beth Orchard, 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Jenkins-Soffe, 4760 South State, Murray Utah on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 2:00 pm. Viewing will be at 12:00 pm, just prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Online condolences: www.jenkins-soffe.com.
We would like to express gratitude to all those who assisted in Dad's care during his last months of life, including the health care workers, friends, neighbors, and many family members. We love you so much, Dad. Thank you for your years with us. Finally, lasting gratitude to the men of the Sugarhouse group….
