John Rich Wood passed away on March 17, 2012 at his home in Murray, Utah, at the age of 81. He was born to Clarence and Marian Wood on January 14, 1931 in Murray, where he later attended Murray High School, excelling in several sports. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and attended College of Southern Utah (now SUU) earning many athletic honors, including future induction into the SUU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983. After graduating from CSU he attended BYU on a football scholarship, where he graduated in 1957 with a degree in Physical Education. He began his coaching and teaching career in Parowan, Utah before moving to Granite High School, and finally Kearns High School, where he was their first basketball coach. He coached at Kearns for 15 years, leading the team to their first basketball state championship in 1972. He continued teaching and as the athletic director retiring in 1985. He had enjoyed life by playing golf, traveling with his wife and friends, and spending time with his grandkids.\n\nDad left a great legacy by the number of students he taught and coached and friends that he had made throughout his life. There was never a time that he would go out where someone did not come up to him and say “do you remember me?” It became a game with the grandkids to see if they could go anywhere without anyone knowing him.\n\nJohn and his wife Virginia Rigby were high school sweethearts at Murray High School, and married on Valentines Day, 1951. John is survived by his wife, Virginia, and three children Brady (Jacquie), Scott (Pam), and Susan Davis (Brad); his brother Bob (Darlene) and sister Jean Snarr (Don); ten grandchildren and 14 great-grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Gregory.\n\nFuneral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah.
