Our beloved mother, grandma and great grandma, Lois Mae (Worts) Kauffman, passed away peacefully on March 11th, 2025, at the age of 91 in South Jordan, Utah. Lois is preceded in death by her husband, Richard and daughter, Pam. She is survived by four of her five children; Jan (Art) Overmyer, Chris (Kari) Kauffman, Stephanie (Sterling) Nielsen and Lisa (Gary) Bluemel. She was a proud grandmother to seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
Lois was born in Whittier, California on August 27th, 1933, to Marjorie and John Worts. Lois was a fraternal twin to her sister, Louise Marie Williams. She grew up in Lynwood, California. When Lois was just 11, her future husband moved in nextdoor to her. She knew instantly he would be the love of her life. Lois was so interested in her new neighbor, Richard, that she took him a piece of her birthday cake. It was the beginning of a fairytale love story. They became best friends and eventually started dating. Richard proposed to Lois at their senior prom, and on September 13, 1952, he married the girl nextdoor. Theirs was a love story like no other and were married for sixty-three years when her husband passed away on April 12th, 2016.
Lois’ family was her everything. She dedicated her life to being an incredible wife, mother and grandma. She loved her family dearly and cultivated happiness in her home. Gift giving was Lois’ love language. Each time she visited with her children or grandchildren, she often had a thoughtful little treat or present to give. Which was sure to bring smiles and laughter to all. Lois lived for spending as much time as she could with family. It’s what brought her the greatest joy in life. It’s also what prompted her passion for genealogy. She loved learning about her ancestors and where they came from.
Lois’ most exceptional gift was her beautiful smile. It lit up every room she was in. It was a smile that would draw you in. Another incredible gift of Lois’, was her ability to connect with all those she met. She was a phenomenal listener. People adored talking to her. She made everyone feel like she’d known them her entire life.
Lois loved every holiday and always made them super special. Each were packed with meaningful traditions the family looked forward to year after year. When Autumn rolled around, it was always a trip to Oak Glen, California to celebrate her one and only son’s birthday amidst the fall leaves, pumpkins and apple cider. Halloween meant chili hot dogs, spiced cider and glazed donuts. See’s Candy filled each family member’s Easter baskets every year. Lois also loved her treats and instilled in her children a love for baking. At Christmas time, everyone would gather in the kitchen where cinnamon rolls, frosted sugar cookies, divinity and fudge were a family baking endeavor. Just another way she brought her family together.
Lois had a knack for decorating. Whether it was making her house a home or decorating for the holidays. It was all done tastefully. She also loved crafting, floral design, reading good books, planning trips and SHOPPING!
In 1962, Lois and her husband, Richard, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. On September 12th, 1963, Lois and Richard were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple for time and all eternity, along with their children Jan, Pam and Chris. Lois had the most beautiful testimony of the Savior and the gospel. You could always find her reading the scriptures.
Lois will be profoundly missed. Her family will forever cherish their sweet memories of her tender-loving ways, her laughter, her wisdom and most importantly, her unconditional love. Lois’ spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched.
