Lynn Whiting

–

Herriman, Utah

Lynn Jensen Whiting passed away February 25, 2023, of causes incident to age. He was born March 10, 1942, the third of four children to Harold and Marie Whiting of Springville, Utah. On July 8, 1965, he married DeAnne Brown in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, Temple.

He came from a family of builders and loved having a project. “Measure twice (sometimes thrice), cut once” was his motto as he helped family members with projects or puttered around the family cabin. He liked to leave things better than he found them and was detail-oriented. This trait manifested in his well-tended flower garden and his goal to read the “fine print” in all his appliance instructions and iPhone updates. He perfected his meticulous skills while managing government contracts and procurement administration.

Lynn was a loving father and grandfather. He worked hard to pass his love of a “job well done” to his children and grandchildren and (gently but persistently) encouraged them to work alongside him during his latest project. Whether it was finishing a basement, tiling a bathroom, planting and beautifying a yard for a wedding reception, or carving a pinewood derby car, Lynn did it with kind words and a big smile.

He spent many summers working for his father, building roads throughout Utah with Whiting & Haymond Construction. He loved to point out roads he had worked on and show rocks and fossils he collected along the way. He also served in the Army National Guard.

Lynn was a lifelong learner and graduated with a degree in business from Brigham Young University. At BYU, he met his sweetheart, DeAnne Brown, falling in love with her as he helped her learn German. Lynn passed his love of BYU to his children and loved watching football and basketball games. He later earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Idaho State University. He liked discussing the details of his job and helping his kids and grandkids bait a hook, tie a fly, or hang drywall.

As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lynn served in the West German and Roseville, California missions. He enjoyed serving and held many church callings, including Bishop, High Councilor, Bishopric Counselor, Sunday School President, and Scoutmaster. Scout campouts were a particular favorite, combining two of his favorite things – the opportunity to connect with people (especially his four sons) and the outdoors. He was always willing to help with a service project.

He was a successful and distinguished business executive. He started his career with a brief and secretive stint in the CIA. He then worked for his father-in-law’s irrigation business in Idaho and then as a government contractor for companies in Idaho, Ohio, New York, and New Mexico.

Lynn loved attending DeAnne’s music recitals and concerts and was proud of her many talents. He cheered for his kids and grandchildren at many sporting, musical, and scouting events. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and skiing. He was especially fond of the Hobble Creek Golf course, including the 16th hole he and his father helped build. He played baseball, football, and basketball as a boy in Springville and enjoyed skiing at Alta from the time he was in the ski club in high school.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Jim. He is survived by his wife, DeAnne, and six children: Kimberly (Chris) Wells of Herriman, Utah; Jeremy (Kim) Whiting of Herriman, Utah; Jason (April) Whiting of Lindon, Utah; Joel (Shelby) Whiting of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Justin (Megan) Whiting of Stansbury Park, Utah; Katelin (Jared) Morton of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and siblings Harriet Clark and Phyllis Haymond. He was a grandpa to 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

His family deeply appreciates the kind staff at the BeeHive Home of Herriman and his supportive Ward family.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 6, 2023 at 10:00 am at the Anthem 4th Ward chapel 12352 South Big Bend Vista Drive, Herriman, UT. A visitation will be held from 9-9:45 prior to the services at the same location. Interment Springville City Cemetery 2:00 pm.
