Margaret Joan Moyes Couch

Margaret Joan Moyes Couch, who went by Joan (JoAnne), passed away Saturday evening April 13th, 2019, in the arms of her eternal sweetheart, Bartlett Linley Couch.

Joan was born on October 19, 1928 in Ogden Utah. She was the first born and only daughter of Maude Archibald Walters and William Stewart Moyes. She played an important role in her family when she was young, as she helped care for her two younger brothers when her father went to serve in the National Guard after Pearl Harbor was bombed. His one-year commitment turned into five and Joan was an anchor for her mother during those rough years.

She attended the University of Utah, where she met her future husband, Bart Couch. He saw her jumping rope in front of her sorority house, and it was love at first sight. They married one week after Joan graduated and went on to have four children; Lynne, Julie, Gaye and Bill.

Joan served faithfully in the church her entire life. She and Bart served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the England London South Mission.

Joan will be remembered for her love of people, her generosity and her kind, ministering heart. Everyone considered her their best friend, and she treated everyone as if they were. She served others continually and taught by her Christ-like example. Joan had a passion for knitting baby booties, and by the end of her life, she had knit countless booties that she donated to the Humanitarian Organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She did this because she didn’t want to think of any infant having cold feet.

She considered herself very blessed and never complained. Even as she struggled to breathe with her lung disease, she would say “What have I to complain about?” Her uncomplaining spirit is part of her legacy to all of her family.

Joan died In Raleigh, NC surrounded by her husband, Bart, her four children and many grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Bartlett Linley Couch, her brother, Ted (Melvina) Moyes, her children Lynne Ward, Julie (Cy) Howington, Gaye (Rick) Baker and Bill (Gale) Couch, nineteen grandchildren and forty-two great grandchildren.

Joan’s funeral will be held on Saturday April 27th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 8950 S. 1300 W. West Jordan, Utah 84088. A visitation with the family will be held at 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral at the same location.
