Maxine Ella Andrews Lawrence, age 90, peacefully passed from mortality to a joyous heavenly reunion January 17, 2008. The daughter of Cyrus (Cy) Andrews and Ella Deveraux, Maxine was born June 24, 1917 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was educated in Idaho Falls.
Beginning in 1926, the Andrews family (Cy, Ella, Violet, Maxine, and Myrtle) made their summer home at Mack’s Inn on the banks of Henry’s Fork of the Snake River where Cy was a pioneer builder. As young girls, Maxine and her sisters helped by peeling the bark from the logs used in construction. On her 16th birthday, Maxine started her first job as a cook in the summer home of Elder Stephen L. Richards. In 1935, at age 18, she began working for ‘Doc’ Mack at Mack’s Inn.
She graduated from Utah State Agricultural College in 1939 with an elementary teaching certificate.
While attending Utah State, she dated Clifford Dean Lawrence. Following his graduation in 1936, they dated during the summers at Mack’s Inn where Cliff was an engineer on the Island Park Dam. He later transferred to the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington and their courtship continued by mail. Maxine and Cliff were married September 6, 1939 at Jackson, Wyoming. They were sealed in the Logan Utah temple on November 10, 1947.
Maxine and Cliff devoted their lives to one another and their family. Their enduring love, selfless sacrifice, and devotion were the foundation of a very happy home and family. Maxine and Cliff raised their children in Coulee Dam, Washington and Klamath Falls, Oregon. In 1978, they moved to Murray, Utah. In 2003, Maxine relocated to South Jordan.
Maxine’s exquisite quilts, teddy bears, Santa Claus cookies, and other hand-crafts remain as cherished reminders of her artistry, industry, and loving service. Following Cliff’s death on January 28, 1985, Maxine began 15 years service as a volunteer quilter at the Murray Heritage Center.
Maxine was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served many years in the Primary, Young Women’s MIA and Relief Society organizations. Maxine exemplified her strength of character by the life she lived. She was a woman of great faith and selflessly gave friendship and service to others.
Preceded in death by her parents, sisters, husband, and son (Steven), Maxine is survived by her daughter Julia, sons Brent (Kay), Bruce (Chris), daughter-in-law Marva, eleven grandchildren (seven spouses), and fifteen great-grandchildren. Maxine’s family expresses appreciation to the caregivers and staff of Legacy House Assisted Living and Intermountain Health Hospice.
