Merrill Albert Wood
March 2, 1934 – May 28, 2026

Merrill Albert Wood, age 92, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Merrill was born on March 2, 1934. He lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family. A provider at heart, Merrill spent many years working two jobs; worked Family Dry Farms clearing boulders and weeding beets, went on to birrell bottling and granite meat. He and his brother Richard went to work for Staker Asphalt Paving holding #1 and #2 spots. Started driving a truck and working for Kennecott at 18, always ensuring his family was cared for and provided for.

He took pride in keeping a beautiful, green, freshly mowed lawn and enjoyed the satisfaction that came from caring for his yard. It was one of the many simple pleasures that brought him happiness throughout his life.

Merrill found his greatest joy in spending time outdoors and with those he loved. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, camping, riding four-wheelers and side-by-sides, gardening, playing pool with mom, and making memories with family and friends. He bought two four Plexes and years later a new Volva truck and pup. Whether on the water, in the mountains, or working in his garden, he appreciated life’s simple pleasures and the company of those around him.

Merrill was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend of 71 years, Jim-etta Cushing Wood, affectionately known as “Jimmie”, who passed away on May 18, 2024. Their marriage was built on love, friendship, devotion, and a lifetime of shared adventures. Together, they created a strong and loving family that remains their greatest legacy.

He is survived by his sons, Vernal (Kathy) Wood, Donald (Nancy) Wood, and Ronald (Patricia) Wood; his daughter, Sandy (Darryl) Smith; his sister, Linda Bailey; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

He loved spending time at their second home in Manila, Utah near Flaming gorge, where he enjoyed playing horseshoes, going fishing at 5:00 a.m., and spending time with family and friends around the campfire.

Merrill’s legacy lives on through the family he loved so deeply. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of the outdoors, and the countless memories he created with family and friends throughout his 92 years.

Though he will be greatly missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he has been reunited with his beloved wife and best friends, Jimmie, after a lifetime of love and 71 years of marriage.

Merrill was also preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Vernal T. “Turk” Wood, Richard Wood, and Suzanne Shaw; his grandson, Ryan Wood; and his great-grandson, Charlie Child.

Graveside services will take place on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at 12:00 pm at Murray City Cemetery (5490 South Vine Street, Murray, Utah).
