Michael Matthews

Michael (Matty) Harold Matthews, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on May 18th, 2024 at the age of 77. He was born on February 21st, 1947 in Murray, Utah to Earl Harold and Rosella Beckstead Matthews. Mike attended local Murray schools including Murray High School. He married Darlene Hansen on July 30th, 1971 and they welcomed twin girls to their family in October of 1973.

Mike loved the mountains, building fires, and teaching his kids and grandkids everything he knew about camping. He was a talented woodcarver; creating many unique walking sticks over the years. He loved bird watching and always made sure the birds and hummingbirds had food and a full bird bath. He could identify any type of bird just by listening to their chirping or bird songs. He spent countless hours caring for his plants and fish pond, and regularly played his favorite music on his speaker for everyone to enjoy. He was a collector of many things, including knives, thermometers, timers, and flashlights.

Mike is survived by his wife Darlene, daughters: Sheri and Stephanie; 6 grandchildren: Brittany, Brighton, Dakoda, Maloree, Avery, Haylee; and his sister Diana. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Sandra and Rochelle, and brother Sam.

Mike’s family wishes to thank the caregivers from Intermountain Homecare and Hospice for their help and compassion during his final days. The family will be celebrating Michael’s life with a private wake in his honor.
