Our sweet Michael passed away on August 20, 2021 after a long battle with Huntington’s Disease.\r\n\r\nMichael John Purdy was born with a full head of dark brown hair on October 30, 1983 in Salt Lake City, UT to Roy Dennis Purdy and Lisa Ann Stark. He was the youngest of four children and endured many pranks from his older siblings - especially being dressed up like an adorable little girl.\r\n\r\nFollowing the death of Roy, Lisa married David Rasmussen. At 9 years old, Michael lost the title of youngest in the family when his half-sister Kaylyn was born. Michael would spend time reading out loud to his baby sister while she sat in her car seat. He would tell her that he hoped one day she would read better than he did.\r\n\r\nMichael was not shy. As a toddler, he would approach strangers at McDonald’s and ask them to share their french fries. When leaving a voicemail or signing a birthday card for any family member, he would always use his full name - ‘Michael Purdy.’ He was always the first to offer a hug to one of his siblings. His special quirks will continue to make us smile for years to come.\r\n\r\nMichael was born with a number of medical issues and he struggled socially and academically as a result. But despite the odds, he graduated from Bingham High School in South Jordan, UT in 2002. Michael wanted to be everybody’s friend. We thank those people in school who were kind to him and accepted his friendship.\r\n\r\nIn 2012, at the young age of 28, Michael was diagnosed with juvenile Huntington’s Disease. While the onset of symptoms normally occurs in the late 30s - mid 40s, Michael’s diagnosis and early onset was rare and seemed to be such an unfair final chapter to Michael’s life. As is the case with HD, Michael spent these last 9 years slowly losing all motor functions. He lost his ability to eat, swallow, walk and talk. We miss hearing his gentle voice. He can be proud to know that despite losing all those things, even at 37, he had a full head of hair just like when he was born!\r\n\r\nMichael is survived by a very loving and dedicated mother and step-father Lisa and David Rasmussen, older brother Matt (Stephanie) Purdy, older sister Emily (Clint) Cunningham, and younger sister Kaylyn (Ben) Mitchell, grandmother Verna Rasmussen, brother-in-law Shawn (Kim) Scivally, and 12 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Roy Purdy, older sister Misty Scivally, and grandparents Mervin Rasmussen, Lorraine Purdy, and Frank and Joan Stark.\r\n\r\nMichael was lovingly cared for in his final years at Midtown Manor in North Salt Lake. A special and heart felt thanks to all those staff members who spent time with him. You are angels on earth!\r\n\r\nA viewing will be held Thursday, August 26th, from 6 - 8 pm and Friday, August 27th from 10 - 10:45 am at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley Mortuary, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway in South Jordan, UT. A short graveside service and dedication of grave will follow Friday’s viewing at 11:00 am at the South Jordan City Cemetery, 10630 S. 1055 W.
