Our angel, Michael Allan Sandstrom, was born on June 16, 1967, to LeRoy and Patricia (Patty) Sandstrom. He was called back home to live with his Heavenly Father on November 8, 2020, due to complications of Covid-19.
He was the sixth child in a family of seven. Even though he was diagnosed with Down’s syndrome, the family rejoiced. The doctors said he should be put in an institution as he would probably not live past 8 years of age. His parents told them they would take him home and love and take care of him. And so the blessings of 53 years began.
Although he had pneumonia in his first winter, he was healthy most of his life, seldom ever getting even a cold or flu. As a baby he soon became the favorite of his immediate family and everyone whose life he touched. Mikey was never blessed to be able to communicate verbally. For the most part he echoed whatever was said but in other ways made his wants and needs known. For example, in later years, he made his love for his mother shown by often patting her cheek even when she was asleep. He liked to give her an occasional kiss but most of those he reserved for his “Daddy.” He was his father’s constant companion and shadow. He would spend some time with his mother, but was soon wandering around looking for his Dad who always welcomed him.
Although Mike couldn’t verbalize, amazingly he could sing beautifully. He knew the hymns, the children’s songs, Disney songs and anything played on KSL FM 100. He also loved and sang Christmas songs. He loved to dance and did so from the first time he heard Michael Jackson.
He loved the holidays mostly because it brought families together.
As a child and even into his teen years, his brothers and sisters were his best friends. In particular was his sister Tricia who was three years younger than he. However, in his later years it was and still is his sister Laura, whom he called “my baby girl.” She was with him in the hospital when he went home.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Sherry Jo, and his brother Ronald. Surviving are his parents; his siblings: David (Susan) Sandstrom, Laura (Darby) Bascom, Keith (Carolyn) Sandstrom, Tricia (Gary) Pyke; and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all.
The family wishes to thank all who have sent cards, money, food, flowers and other gifts. They also want to thank the staff at Columbus Activity Center for 31 Years of love and care.
The viewing will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16th, at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, located at 4760 S. State St. in Murray. The funeral will be held at Winder 4th Ward, but only immediate family members will be able to attend in person, due to the pandemic stipulations. All others may watch the funeral by webcast courtesy of Jenkins-Soffe (see link above).
One of the last things Mike said was:
“Remember? Remember? (a pause) Remember Michael.” We will.
