Sandy, Utah
Mont Leonard Millerberg was born on December 14, 1949 to Mary Dorothy Allen and Robert Eugene (Gene) Millerberg. Gene gave him a love of adventure and hard work. Dorothy taught him to tell a good joke, cheat at cards, and back a trailer. Mont gained a testimony of the restored gospel as a young child and nourished that faith throughout his life.
Mont had four siblings (Reid, Jim, Julie and Bob), all raised in Midvale, Utah. His youth was spent with his family building models, working at the ranch, hunting, boating, and shooting guns. He was taught young to drive at the ranch by his mother, but still got his pilot's license before he got his driver's license. Mont graduated from Hillcrest High School, class of 1968 and remained a Husky his whole life.
Mont served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Zurich in Switzerland (1969-71). During his mission, Mont recovered from a life-threatening pancreatitis. He developed a love for the Swiss people, fondue, and biking. After returning from his mission, Mont immediately reported to basic training with the Army National Guard and resumed dating his high school sweetheart Kris.
While Kris and Mont were talking in the car one night, Kris told Mont to get his butt in gear and propose. So Mont used the ever-so-romantic gesture of placing the ring on the dash of the car and saying, “HERE, let’s get on with it!” They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on Aug 15, 1972. From then on, Mont stated that “he had won the lottery.”
After their wedding, Mont studied accounting at Weber State University. After graduation, Mont and Kris moved to Sandy where he would live until his death. Their 6 children Brady (Megan), Spencer (Amanda), Tori (Mitch), Cordell, Andy (Taylor), and Mitch grew up on Millerberg Drive with their grandparents, aunts, and uncles close by.
Mont’s favorite playmates were his six children and sixteen grandkids. He often could be found wrestling, golfing, or beating his grandkids at late-night heart games. He played to win. He liked to say, “I play for fun, what’s not fun about winning?”
During the winter, Mont was known for his helmet adorned with duck stickers. Each sticker symbolized a grandchild who passed a skills test on the ski slopes. Those grandchildren who passed the test, became one of “Grandpa’s Ducks”, complete with a full “in-duck-tion” ceremony. In the warmer months, Mont and his daughter-in-law Amanda hosted family bike rides called “The Tour-de-Donut”. Each ride would be to a donut shop in the Salt Lake Valley with grandkids joining the fun. Mont and Kris created a home with a kitchen counter full of neighbors and children’s friends. It was a welcome place for all. Multiple people even took up residence in their basement.
Mont was dedicated to serving in his church. He was a home teacher to the same families for over 30 years. Mont served as scoutmaster for 12 years. Hundreds of youth went camping with Mont and learned how to ski behind his “green pickle” boat. He served in bishoprics in family and YSA wards. Mont and Kris also served a mission in an Inner-City SLC Ward. All of these experiences expanded Mont’s circle of those he loved and those who loved him.
Amidst all this, Mont had a successful career in accounting for public firms, midsize companies, and as his own boss with Millerberg & Myers, PLLC. Mont collected lifelong friends during this time. Neighbors, friends, kids, and even his kids’ friends would come to his office each year, seeking Mont’s “no bovine stool” wisdom on finances and life.
Mont was full of life to the very end. One week, he was skiing black diamonds, biking, serving on the school board, playing with his grandkids, and making “babies” (what he called sourdough bread); the next week, he was gone. Mont passed away the evening of Feb 23, 2024, after suffering a stroke. He was surrounded by his family and his wife of 51 years. He would have said, “That was a first-class ticket out,” employing a swift and dignified departure. Given Mont’s legacy, nothing would make him prouder than if we all continued to embody the values of love, family, joyful living, and community service that he exemplified. Instead of flowers, please donate to the Canyons Education Foundation. Mont helped create this foundation, and your donations will help fund a perpetual scholarship in his name.
