Murriel Sorensen Smith Obituary (1926 - 2009)

Murriel Sorensen Smith was born in Buhl, Idaho, on December 29th, 1926 to Foster and Florence Sorensen. She graduated from Buhl High school and then went on to Utah State University. She met Vernon Dale Smith and they were married September 15th, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple. She graduated from Utah State with a Bachelors degree in Home Economics. Murriel and Vernon had seven children, Catherine (David Gray), Dale (Cynthia), Ruth (Don MacAngus), Eric, Val, Cheerine (David Jordan), LaRene (Robert Bautner). They have 26 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Murriel was also mother to numerous other children who needed a family and home. The way she lived her life is characterized by how she loved and served family and friends. Grandma shared with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren many of her talents and accomplishments including beading, jewelry making, photography, and numerous photo albums of family, activities and events. She has made countless coats, jackets, sweaters, mittens, outfits, afghans and quilts. She has won top places in county and state fairs for her candies, breads and baked goods. She loved bird watching, flowers and all beautiful things in nature. In 1956, Murriel and Vernon opened Millcreek Gardens, Inc, and side by side they worked together to provide for their family. In 1995 they left to serve a mission in Croatia for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Murriel also served in the relief society, primary and cub scouts. Her love of her family and the Savior Jesus Christ were reflected in all that she did. Murriel passed away on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009, at home with her husband and grandchildren. We will miss our loving Grandma! Come commemorate her life with us. The funeral for Murriel will be held at the Winder Eleventh Ward chapel, 930 East 3750 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84106, on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at 12:00 pm. There will be a viewing on Monday, July 6, 2009, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Jenkins Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State St, Salt Lake City, Utah 84107. There will also be a viewing preceding the funeral on Tuesday at 11:00 am.
