Nellie Hughes Barnett returned to her Heavenly Father on March 7, 2007 due to complications from cancer. She was born March 13, 1917 in Mesquite, Nevada to James Elmer Hughes and Mary Emily Abbott Hughes.\n\nShe married Wilmer Lee Barnett in the St. George Temple April 3, 1936. She graduated from Brigham Young High School and attended BYU and the U of U. She was a life-long member of the LDS Church and held many positions of leadership in the ward and stake. She enjoyed her service as a Relief Society, Primary, and Young Women’s President. She was a dedicated teacher, both by word and deed. Nellie was loved and revered by everyone who knew her for her non-judgmental, unconditional love. She lived as she believed and was most happy when serving others. She was a supportive wife and helpmate to her husband in his many callings of leadership in the church and community. She was a loving and devoted Mother and an example of graciousness to all who knew her. She loved her children, grand, great, and great-great grandchildren. She was so proud of them and their accomplishments, especially their church activity and their love for each other and the Savior. She was at peace with her life here on earth and anxiously wanted to move on.\n\nNellie had many close calls with death because of heart trouble, diabetes and cancer. Each trial strengthened her knowledge of the purpose of life here on earth and faith in the eternities to come. She lived to appreciate many wonderful changes throughout her lifetime.\n\nShe is survived by her two children: Owen Lee Barnett (Jennie) and MaryLynn McCardell (Robert), Seven grandchildren: Dr. Richard Barnett (Tammy), Dr. David Barnett (Debbie), MaryAnn Hatch (Gary), Melissa Woodside (Dan), Jim Barnett (Lisa), Shaun McCardell (Wendy), Jann Boyer (Mark); 25 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Colleen Waite (Erwin) Bakersfield, CA, Rose Marie Blake (Lowell) Veyo, UT, and brother Bill R. Hughes (Naomi) Ogden, UT. She is preceded in death by her husband, one infant son, Wilmer Dale, her mother, father, and two brothers, Clair Hughes and Archie E. Hughes.\n\nFuneral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, March 10, 2007 in the S.L. Little Cottonwood 1st Ward building, 6350 So. Rodeo Lane (1545 E. 6400 So.), Murray, UT. A viewing will be held Friday evening from 6 until 8 P.M. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State St., Murray, UT and Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M. before the services at the church. Interment will be at Murray City Cemetery.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, please contribute donations to the Primary Children’s Medical Center or The Huntsman Cancer Center.\n\nThe family would like to express sincere gratitude to Care Source Hospice for the loving care they gave to our mom.
