Norman H. Bangerter Obituary (1933 - 2015)

Norman Howard Bangerter passed away from a stroke on April 14, 2015. He was born on January 4, 1933, the tenth of eleven children born to William Henry Bangerter and Isabelle Bawden Bangerter. He grew up in Granger (now West Valley City), Utah. He graduated from Cyprus High where he played basketball, baseball, and served in student government. He attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah where he majored in history, and served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea, in 1953-54. Like his father before him Norm, was a homebuilder and had a strong work ethic which he taught his children and grandchildren. Norm married his high-school sweetheart, Colleen Monson, in the Salt Lake Temple on August 18, 1953 and together they raised seven children. Colleen was a devoted partner to Norm and they shared 57 years together until her death in July 2011. He married Judy Schiffman, a dear friend of Colleen's and their family, in January 2012. Judy has been a devoted wife, companion, and is cherished by the entire family. Service to family, church, and community were paramount in his life. He served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as bishop, stake president, and as a sealer at the Jordan River Temple. With Colleen he presided over the Johannesburg, South Africa Mission from 1996-1999. What went unseen were numerous acts of charity, generosity and service to many individuals and families. Elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 1974, his colleagues quickly recognized his leadership capabilities as they elected him as Assistant Majority Whip, Majority Leader, and as the first two-term Speaker of the House in forty years. In 1984 he was elected Utah's 13th Governor, and re-elected in 1988. Integrity and the courage to make difficult decisions were hallmarks of his public service. Preceded in death by his wife Colleen, parents, and siblings Sarah B. Hardy, W. Grant Bangerter, Samuel B. Bangerter, Blauer L. Bangerter, Elsbeth B. Hansen, Glenneith B. Wilson, and David C. Bangerter. Survived by his wife Judy, children Garret (Karen), Ann (Rick) Gayheart, Jordan (Susan), Blair (LaNae), Alayne (Steve) Isom, Adam (Nicole), Erdman (Patty) Jake, step-children Lance Schiffman, Stacey (Dustin) Hartley, Tara (Mike) Adams, Garrett (Amanda) Schiffman and sisters Pauline B. Jensen, Marian B. Lindsey, and Naomi B. Christofferson. Norm's posterity currently numbers 110 including 30 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 12:00 noon at the LDS Institute of Religion at Salt Lake Community College Jordan Campus, 3431 W. Wights Fort Rd. (9191 South), West Jordan. A viewing will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the LDS South Jordan Parkway Stake Center, 9894 S. 2700 West, South Jordan. A private viewing will be held Saturday prior to the services. Interment will be at the South Jordan City Cemetery.
