Salt Lake City, Utah
Thad Orden Yost, 83, passed away unexpectedly on September 28, 2026, in Salt Lake City after suffering a heart attack while preparing for a round of golf. He was born January 5, 1943, in Logan, Utah, to Thad Orlo and Priscilla Dean (Van Orden) Yost. Orden never met a stranger and was known for his firm handshake, big hug, infectious laugh, and unfailing willingness to help.
Orden served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern California Mission following a year at Ricks College. After his mission he attended Idaho State and then BYU, which he left to serve as a decorated United States Army officer in Vietnam. A graduate of Ranger and Special Forces School, he served as a patrol platoon leader with Company C (Ranger), 75th Infantry (Airborne), and received the Bronze Star Medal with V Device for valor in combat among other assignments and decorations over the course of his service.
He married Georgia Lynn Hyer in 1976. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised four children and built a family life centered on faith, hard work, service, music, sports, family dinners, shared experiences, and devotion to one another. That commitment continued with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren
.
Orden built a distinguished career in sales and commercial real estate over six decades; he was an original member of Consolidated Realty Group and concluded his career at Colliers. He was widely respected for his integrity, optimism, humor, generosity, and mentorship.
He also devoted decades to youth soccer, helping found Murray Max Soccer Club and serving Utah Youth Soccer in numerous capacities. He was inducted into the UYSA Kirk Hoecherl Hall of Fame in 2019.
Orden served faithfully in many church callings. Especially dear to him were the years he served as Branch President at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. His testimony was not something he reserved for church. At family dinners, he regularly welcomed everyone to the table with the same simple declaration: “We love you! The Gospel is true.”
Orden loved his faith, family, golf, church service, music, gardening, coaching, and people. He excelled in many sports including baseball, basketball, football, track and field, gymnastics, and wrestling. As a wrestler at Wellesley High School in Cambridge, MA, he won the New England Inter-Scholastic Championship and at Ricks College he was the 1962 ICAC champion, and placed 3rd at the NJCAA championship, becoming Ricks’ first All American at 123 pounds. He also completed multiple marathons and later in life rediscovered a passion for wheel thrown pottery.
Orden was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Marion; and his brothers, Clair and Eric. He is survived by his wife, Georgia; his children, Michelle (Mark) Kershaw, Joshua (Kim) Yost, Jordan (Chelsey) Yost, and Cali (Caleb) Hunt; 13 grandchildren, Karly (Alfeleti), Tarah (Jake), Hannah, Weston, Eli, Adelyn, Zoë, Grayson, Aiden, Hattie, Frederick, Mia, and Tessa; and three great-grandchildren, Oliana, Maverick, and Sloane. He is also survived by his brother Albert (Stacey) Yost, sister-in-law Janelle Yost, brother-in-law Mitch Hyer, sister-in-law Tamera Yost, and many much-loved nieces and nephews
.
