Porfiria Barrera Obituary (1954 - 2015)

"Popi" On October 16, 2015 our beloved mother, daughter and sister, Porfiria Barrera passed away at Intermountain Medical Center due to stroke complications. She died peacefully with family members by her side. This amazing woman was born on September 15, 1954 to Jose Barrera Portuguez and Ana Maria Reyes Higuera in Mexico City. In 1974 Popi (as she liked to be called) married Victor Nolasco in Mexico City and later divorced. She had two children Aline Nolasco who passed away at birth and Victor Lael Nolasco. In 1995 married Jared Valdez, and had Leslie Anne Valdez. She and Jerry later divorced. Popi loved her children dearly and tried her best to provide for them in all of their needs. She rejoiced in their successes and stood next to them in their failures. Popi always wanted the best for them and hoped for them to achieve all of their goals and dreams. In addition to her children, Popi also loved her mother and siblings very much and devoted her life to them as well. Popi was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Her fondest memories were of attending the Lucero Ward, where she served in many callings including Primary and Sunday school teacher and counselor. She loved children and rejoiced sitting, teaching and signing next to them. Later she served as Young Womens counselor, where she led by example and always advised the young women to trust their parents and to be firm in their faith. She always lived a life of service and always thought of others before herself. We have often been told that Popi "positively influenced their lives." Popi was not one to judge and would often be the first to help in any situation. Popi was proceeded in death by her father, Jose Barrera Portuguez, beloved sister Rosa Maria Barrera Alba and her daughter Aline Nolasco. She is survived by her children Victor Lael Nolasco and Leslie Anne Valdez, granddaughter Lizette Jelena Nolasco, mother Anna Maria Barrera, siblings Javier Barrera (Amalia), Nelly Barrera, Antonia Diaz, Hiram Barrera (Thelma), Jared Barrera, and Aaron Barrera (Veronica) and brother in law, Joel Alba. She is also survived by numerous nieces, and nephews who will miss their 'Tia Popa" dearly. Our Heavenly Father has called Popi back home, as her mission here on earth is complete. We will miss her so much as she had so much love to give. We would like to say thank you to our grandmother for her love, devotion and the care she gave Popi during the past couple of years. We would also like to thank all of our family, and friends whom pulled together in our time of need to help honor Popi. We invite all friends and family to please join us in the remembering our dear mother Popi Barrera. Funeral Services for Popi will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the North Star Ward, 1955 West 400 North Salt Lake City, Utah, where a viewing will take place on Friday evening from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM and on Saturday morning, one hour prior to the service.
