Robert J Carroll

–

South Jordan, UT

Robert J. Carroll died on January 9, 2015 in South Jordan, UT. He was born to Thomas and Susan Carroll in Philadelphia, PA on October 24, 1923. He was one of nine children. He married his childhood friend Mary Murray, also of Philadelphia, PA, on Thanksgiving Day in 1949 and was a devoted husband until her death three months ago. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country during World War II, primarily in the Pacific Theater on the islands of Tinian and Saipan. After the end of the war, he returned to Philadelphia and continued his career with H.W. Butterworth and Sons Company which manufactured textile machinery. He worked there for over 30 years in many facets including layout, inspection, and the making of detailed screens. When the textile machine industry moved from the northeast US to the southeast US, Bob changed careers and worked for Holy Redeemer Hospital as their sewer treatment plant operator until his retirement. He was also a volunteer fireman for Horsham Township for many years. He believed that it was critical to give a full day's effort at whatever job you were doing.
He lived in the Philadelphia area until 1993, when he and his wife moved to South Jordan, UT to join their daughters.
Dad was a wonderful father and a happy, easygoing, generous, honest person who loved people and a good story. He always had a smile and time for others. Dad was always active and involved. He had many interests: talking to people, reading and learning, especially history, listening to music, gardening, cooking and trying new recipes, and doing his daily sudoku puzzle. He had an incredibly accurate eye and if he said that something was just slightly crooked or "out of kilter" (as he would say), you didn't need to measure it because it was. Dad enjoyed playing games and cards, especially the card game Hand and Foot, which is a version of canasta. He and his card partner of many years, Maureen, just recently won our annual competition and he enjoyed teasing the rest of us about their victory.
Dad was tremendously patriotic and made sure that he flew his US flag each day. He was a man of faith and a lifelong member of the Catholic Church.
He is survived by his daughters, Kacey and Robin; sister-in-law, Gertrude, sister-in-law, Anne (Bob), brother-in-law Ed (Rosemary); numerous nieces and nephews, their spouses and children; and many close friends. The world is a better place because of him and how he lived.
A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 2:00pm at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, located at 7404 Redwood Road, West Jordan, UT. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Bob's name to either the Building Fund for St. Andrew Church in Riverton, UT, or to the Primary Children's Hospital Foundation in Salt Lake City, UT.
