Robert passed away peacefully, due to natural causes at his home surrounded by his loving family Saturday afternoon on January 10, 2015.
Dad was born in Denver, Colorado on June 20, 1935 to Donald Popham and Ruth Cavanaugh. Prior to serving in the Korean War, he fell in love with Jeanne Darling. When Robert returned, he married Jeanne at the Cathedral of Madeline on March 3, 1957. Robert had many nicknames given to him by all his many acquaintances some of which became true friends. He would answer to Bob, Po, Poo-poo Popham, and Robert. He work for Snap-On Tools for over 20 years in SLC before moving to Yuba City, California where he worked for Mac Tools and operated an upholstery business which complemented his wife's drapery work. Robert moved back to SLC in 1993 with his loving wife. Prior to retirement, Robert worked for Henry Day Ford. During his busy life he enjoyed many outdoor activities, hunting, fishing, golfing and stock car racing to name a few. His wife was by his side except hunting. Dad was dedicated to raising his family, donated funds to local charities and sharing his childhood stories about his sister and brother. Dad fell in love with county music and more so soft Dolly Parton songs which reminded him of his wife. Over the last 3 years, Dad's health slowed him down. He was unable to go to the gym and walk with his lady friends and visit with his friends each week over breakfast. But Robert made new friends at the VA Hospital. Whether it was the volunteer greeter, the nurses or the many doctors who worked with him, he still kept his spirits high and his sense of humor. Many knew Robert by name as he entered the hospital never complaining about how he felt. Dr. Phil Kithas was a personal favorite! They bonded like brothers. Dr. Kithas was always there for Robert. Over the last 6 months, Dad was confined to his comfortable home with his loving family with new and old friends coming to visit. The Hospice Team from Harmony was there every day working with his daughter, Lori, to make sure all his needs were met. Again, he made new friends and enjoyed visiting with them daily. The family wishes to thank dad's support team for all their love and attention! Saturday was a peaceful day. He fell asleep and returned to see his wife, mom and dad, brother and sister and his grandson. Robert is survived by his sons Donald (Heidi) and Alan (Joette), his daughters Robin Erickson and Lori (Jake) Warden and eight grandchildren, and six great- grandchildren. Holding close to Robert's wishes, there will be gravesite services on January 17th at 11:00 am to noon located at Mt. Olivet Cemetery next to his wife and close to his brother. Please don't say you are sorry, but come and share your memories.
