Murray, UT
Sam Loizos was born August 25, 1930 in Murray, Utah, to Greek immigrants Chris and Angelica Takanikos Loizos. He was the youngest of six siblings and the first to be born in a hospital. Together with his three sisters and two brothers the family worked a small farm on 1300 East (when it was a gravel road and you waved at neighbors on the next block). He was living in the family home when he passed away peacefully March 30, 2018, in his favorite chair. He was 87.
Sam attended Woodstock Elementary (where two generations of his family would follow), Olympus Jr. High, Granite High School and the University of Utah. He served honorably in the Korean Conflict and upon his return began working for Mountain Bell. He lived and worked in Salt Lake and Denver. He and his children were lifelong Denver Broncos fans. He started working as a cable repairman and moved up to management, retiring from US West in 1985. Upon retirement, he immediately began farming the land he grew up on.
Sam’s two children, Scot and Suzanne, were the light of his life.
Sam was a great cook with food ‘for the masses’ in good Greek style. He was an excellent bowler, playing on several leagues and enjoyed skiing, golfing and hunting in his early years. In his retirement, he built World War I plane replicas to 1/4 scale with his longtime friend Dick. Several of these planes hanging in various businesses in Utah today. He could fix anything and freely gave of his time and resources to help family and friends, always ready to help in any circumstance. Sam was never happier than when he fired up his tractor and could not wait for spring each year. His garden was abundant, and he generously passed on the harvest. Sam had an easy going style. He had many friends and enjoyed ‘going for a cup’ anytime.
Sam is survived by his son Scot (Liz) Loizos and their children Aerin (Isaac) Lund and Stevie Loizos; daughter Suzanne Loizos and her daughter Ashlyn King; as well as great-grandchildren Emrys and Oswin Lund. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews and their families, whose lives have been influenced and sharpened by Uncle Sam. Sam is preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings, Connie Cardon, Sonia Handy, Wilma Teed; and his two brothers and best friends, Jim and Tom Loizos, as well as in-laws, Bette ‘Vic’ Loizos, Paul Cardon and Charles Teed.
Services will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State St., Murray at 12 Noon, with a viewing from 10:00-11:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please spend time and have fun with your family and friends. Sam will be forever loved and missed.
