Scott "Fred" H. Johnson Obituary (1931 - 2015)

Salt Lake City, UT – Scott "Fred" Henry Johnson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend passed away on May 6, 2015. Scott was born in Vernal, Utah on January 18, 1931 to Peter Clarence Johnson and Ane Geneva Peterson Johnson. Scott was born into a large family where he learned the value of hard work on the farm in the remote area of Ioka. He gained a love for hunting and fishing that would remain with him and become a source of joy throughout his life. He graduated from Roosevelt Senior High School in May 1950, and after working for a brief time in the oil fields he entered the United States Army in May 1951. He served his country in the State Of Alaska as a draftsman until his discharge in April 1953. He met the love of his life, Carol Ann Condon, while living in Provo. After a brief courtship, they were married on July 15, 1955. He counted it as one of his greatest honors to be sealed to her for all time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 21, 1963. Together they had two children, Robert and Cheryl. Scott graduated from Salt Lake Vocational School in barbering, and apprenticed at the Belvedere Barber Shop until he received his master certification. He spoke with fondness about the experiences he had while working as a barber at the Hotel Utah, and later at the Style Den. His clientele ranged from notable Utah politicians, and General Authorities of the LDS Church, to his close friends and family members. The friendships that were forged during his professional career have persisted through the years. Scott served faithfully in his LDS church assignments. He served as a scout master for many years and assisted dozens of young men in achieving their Eagle Scout. He held many callings in his ward, including serving in the Bishopric. He served joyfully for nearly a decade as a service missionary at Welfare Square. He frequently extended his call and countless lives were blessed by his humble service. Scott was an adventurer and a world traveler. Scott became an avid outdoorsman and was an excellent marksman. He excelled in archery and as a result he earned the nick name "Fred" after the Fred Bear archery line. He found profound happiness in traveling with his children and grandchildren, including traveling to the Philippines, Canada, South Africa, and Alaska where he would hunt, fish, golf and enjoy the diversity of the globe. He was rough and tough, and simultaneously gentle, loving, witty and lighthearted to those who knew him best. He raised several Golden Retrievers over the years, who were spoiled with love and adventures as his constant companions. Scott is survived by his children Robert Scott Johnson and Cheryl (Steve) Bridges, grandchildren Leslie (Michael) Dean, Stephanie (Robert) Kopet, Rachel (TJ) Peterson, Scott (Emily) Johnson, Rick Johnson, Dan (Brandi) Johnson, nine great grandchildren, sister Leona Iorg, and his 2 beloved golden retrievers. He was preceded in death by his wife Carol, his parents, and nine siblings. A viewing will be held on Monday, May 11, 2015, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Home, 4760 South State Street, Murray, UT. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at 11:00am in the Crystal Heights Chapel, 1978 East Stratford Ave, Salt Lake City, UT.
