Theda Lucille Bassett passed away unexpectedly on July 3, 2011 after spending a beautiful weekend in Star Valley, Wyoming surrounded by her family.\n\nTheda was born January 7, 1933 to Ammon Fransillo & Lucile Tippets Bassett in Afton, Wyoming. She grew up in a log cabin in Dry Creek Canyon. Married LaVell Butt, later divorced. Married Lance Draper, later divorced.\n\nAfter graduating from Star Valley High School, she moved to Ogden and worked for the telephone company. Theda began her government career as a telephone operator at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City. She worked for the Postal Service for 15 years, and then worked in Public Affairs for the Bureau of Reclamation.\n\nAfter retiring in 1987, she began writing and publishing many poems and books. Published works include: Grandpa Neibaur Was A Pioneer, Writing Between the Lines, Sea of Cortez Dancing, and Tale of Twin Hollows. Her last work, Sea in His Face (Sea Voyages of Jorgen Pederson), was weeks away from publication. Her poetry has won many awards and been published in many anthologies. She served as president of Utah Poetry Society. Theda worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture as a vital statistics enumerator.\n\nTheda cherished her pioneer heritage and inspired her family to do the same through her written stories and poetry. Theda had a great love of the gospel and served wherever called. She served in the Jordan River Temple and other local missionary callings in her later years.\n\nTheda is survived by her children, Michael (Clyda) Butt, Steven (Terrie) Butt, Gordon (Kittryn) Butt, Neesha (Alan) Gale; siblings, Dean (Geri), Nevin, Nellie Cole, LaRae Bihler, Weldon (Judy), Melvin (Dee), Ronald (June) MaryJean (Robert) Strawn; 16 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; and brothers, Clarence, Harlo, and Alan.\n\nA viewing will be held Friday, July 8, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S. State Street, Murray, Utah, and from 12:00-12:45 p.m. prior to services at the church on Saturday. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Heritage Ward, 67 W. Clay Park Drive in Murray, Utah. Interment: Murray City Cemetery.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, donations for publishing Theda’s latest book may be made any Wells Fargo Branch Bank to the Theda Bassett’s Memorial Fund.
