Vard Lawrence Hadley Obituary (1926 - 2010)

Our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Vard Lawrence Hadley, passed away July 10, 2010. He was born February 22, 1926 to Lawrence and LaVon Farr Hadley in Taylor, Utah. After graduating from Ogden High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January, 1944 at the age of 17. He spent two and a half years serving with the 5th Marine Division in the South Pacific, and landed in Iwo Jima on the 1st day of the invasion. He spent nearly a year on Occupation Duty in Japan. He returned home to Ogden in July, 1946. He later moved to Boise, Idaho where he met his Sweetheart, Ella (Angie) Schritter. They were married in Ogden, Utah in 1948. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple in 1953. After graduating from Boise Jr. College they moved to San Jose, California where they lived for 40 years. He attended Weber Jr. College, Boise Jr. College and graduated with an Elementary Teaching Credential and a Masters Degree in Education Administration from San Jose State. He was employed in the Cupertino School District from 1951 until 1991 as an Elementary Teacher, an Elementary School Principal and a District Consultant. He loved working with people, especially the children. He was happiest when he was on the playground supervising the children and he knew almost all 300-500 students by name. He and Angie enjoyed short trips, taking in the sights and sounds of the United States. They loved camping in Lake Tahoe with their two children, Kathy and Tom. He enjoyed all sports such as softball, basketball, tennis and, later in life, golf. He loved watching and coaching his children and grandchildren in all of their sporting and theatrical activities. He also has enjoyed watching his great granddaughter grow up. He was devoted to his wife Angie (Ella) who was always supportive in all his activities, callings, and assignments. They both enjoyed their callings as Temple Workers in the Oakland Temple. She was the “Love of his life”. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He held numerous callings from Nursery Teacher to Bishop. He especially enjoyed his calling as Bishop of the River Ridge 8th Ward. The members were so supportive and appreciative. He loved the Gospel and had a strong testimony of the truthfulness of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. He is survived by his dear wife Angie Hadley, his daughter Kathy McElroy, his son Tom Hadley (Becky), his grandchildren, Amanda (Mac), Kyle, Travis, Jackson (Mallory), Carly (Thomas), his great granddaughter Tessah, his brother Steve (Shirley) Hadley, and is sister Cheryl (Jack) Wilson. He enjoyed his golfing buddies and wishes “Semper Fi” to all. A viewing will be held Friday, July 16th, from 6-8 PM at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley located at 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 S.), South Jordan, UT. A funeral will be held Saturday, July 17th, at 11:00 AM, with a viewing prior to the service from 10:00-10:45 AM at the LDS Chapel located at 10190 South 1300 West in South Jordan, next to the Jordan River Temple.
