Vernon Cole Young, M.D. Obituary (1926 - 2011)

“Together Again”Vernon Cole Young, MD our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away on July 12, 2011 in Murray, Utah from natural causes. He was surrounded by many of his children and grandchildren.He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leslie Henry and Eva Melissa Cole Young, being the fourth of five children. Vernon attended Whittier and Garfield elementary schools, Irving Junior High and East High School. Vernon served 3 years in the U.S. Army Air Force being stationed in the USA, Africa and Europe during WWII. Upon returning back home he attended the University of Utah, where he met his wonderful wife Elva Margaret Davis at the LDS Institute of Religion. After a whirlwind romance, he proposed marriage at the base of “This Is the Place Monument” on the 100 year anniversary of the pioneers arrival into the Salt Lake Valley. Thus beginning their life together on the day Salt Lake City had celebrated its biggest bash. They were married October 10, 1947. After 6 short weeks, Vernon served an LDS mission to the British Isles. While on his mission, Vernon became acquainted with some of his nearest and dearest friends. These acquaintances have become life-long friends. Vernon loved serving his mission and vowed to serve again later in life with his sweetheart Elva. Upon returning home he attended medical school at George Washington University in Washington D.C. He concluded his training in Boston, MA at the Brighton Marine Hospital. When Vernon returned to Utah, he became a member of the Uintah County and Salt Lake County Medical Societies and served as Trustee of the Utah State Medical Association. He practiced in the Uintah Basin for six years and then in Salt Lake City for 32 years.Vernon loved the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was especially proud that he attained his Eagle Scout award and that all of his sons followed his lead and received their Eagles as well. He was a frequent teacher in Sunday School and priesthood classes. He loved to study the gospel and loved to share it with his loved ones. In almost every conversation he had with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he always tried to bring in a gospel topic or tried to share his testimony. He was always available to any of his loved ones whenever they needed a blessing or some encouragement. He served as a Ward and Stake YMMIA President. He was blessed to serve many years with his lovely wife, Elva on the Ward activities committee. That was a lot of fun for him.He served in most every organization in his area. He served in the bishopric of the Big Cottonwood Stake 14th Ward, his most enjoyable calling was as an Ordinance Worker in the Jordan River Temple. Vernon was a shift coordinator the last year of his life. He was so very sad the last few months of his life that he had to be released for health reasons.Retirement from his own medical practice came early allowing Elva and himself to serve medical missions in the Philippine Micronesia area and the Central American Area. They loved the missionary environment and flourished wherever they were.Vernon was an avid pilot and loved to travel extensively. He criss-crossed the United States multiple times taking friends and family along as well. He visited many of the beautiful countries around the globe as well as in the United States.The family will never forget the many water skiing trips to Lake Powell and close to home. On more than one occasion, you would see Vernon on his knees and in a wet bathing suit with sterile gloves on and a small sterile field, suturing up a cut or gash on the head or other injuries from waterskiing. He never wanted the fun to end.We’ll never forget the trips to Yellowstone Park, Southern Utah, Goblin Valley, Europe and many other places. Perhaps our favorite area was going to Capistrano beach and to Disneyland. We will never forget the grunion run at midnight when the fish came up on the beach to spawn.We are eternally grateful for the fine man that Vernon has become. We have looked to him as a righteous patriarch of our ever growing family. As he diminished in health over the past year and a half, he began longing for our mother. Just last week he spoke lovingly of seeing her again soon.He is now with our amazing mother. He has fought a good fight. We shall always look to him for his vigor for life, great love of family and for his great testimony and example of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We love him dearly and we shall miss him. We know, however, that we shall see him again someday where there is peace, love and no pain. Goodbye for now our dear father.Survived by his children Stephen (Jolene), Russell (Jalene), Ronald (Michelle), Barbara (Kevin) Camp, Alan, and David (Ruthanne), 37 granchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Elva and his parents.Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 11:00 am at the River Ridge 7th Ward Chapel, 10200 S. 1300 W., in South Jordan. A viewing will be held Friday, July 15, 2011 from 6:30-8:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Pkwy (10600 S.) and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the LDS Perpetual Education or Missionary funds.
