Our beloved mother Viona Rae Taggart Nelson of South Jordan, Utah, graduated this earthly life to join her eternal companion on January 11, 2024. She was born on April 13,1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Renold Laird Taggart and Luana Rae Davis Taggart. She graduated from South High School in 1954.\n\nAs a teenager, she helped and worked at the family-owned Panda Ice Cream store with her father in Inglewood, California. She loved to dance and was in the cast for the Hill Cumorah Pageant in Palmyra, New York.\n\nWhile she was working as a dental assistant, she met the love of her life, Gary C. Nelson, on a blind date. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on July 1, 1957. They were blessed with 3 children, Scott, Shauna and Terri. Their home was always welcome to everyone, many of whom lived with them, and all felt welcome.\n\nOne of Viona’s most treasured blessings in her life was her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served faithfully in various callings over the years. She served as the ward and stake Jr. Sunday School coordinator, ward and stake Young Women’s President, ward and stake Relief Society Counselor, Stake Relief Society President and on the Church Correlation committee where she helped to write the lesson manuals for the church. She was member of the Utah DUP and was grateful for her ancestors who accepted the gospel so she could have it in her life.\n\nShe also served in the temple and loved the time she spent there. She was a temple worker, 2nd assistant to the temple matron when her husband was called as the 2nd counselor to the temple president, President Ben B. Banks.\n\nShe and her sweetheart also served faithfully in two church missions. The first in Manila, Philippines and the second in the Europe East Area.\n\nShe is survived by her three children, son Scott, daughters, Shauna Miller and Terri (Jim) Wulfenstein, 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, her sister LuJean Marsh and brother Laird Taggart. Preceded in death by her husband, Gary C. Nelson and her parents Renold Laird Taggart and Luana Rae Davis Taggart.\n\nFuneral services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1:00 pm at the River Ridge 8th Ward, 1409 West 9800 South, South Jordan, Utah. Viewings will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, UT, and on Saturday from 11:30 am -12:30 pm at the church. Interment at Sandy City Cemetery.
