VirJean Hortin Reynolds
“Jean”
Our beautiful mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, sister and friend Jean Reynolds, passed away of natural causes on April 5, 2024 surrounded by her family. Jean was born on July 12, 1928 at Bingham Canyon Hospital in Utah to Reed Ephraim and Leah Jones Hortin. She was the oldest of 4 beautiful daughters. Jean married her sweetheart Jay Gordon Reynolds in the Salt Lake Temple on November 21, 1945. She waited faithfully for him for 2 years as he served his country in the Navy during WWII. They loved each other dearly and were married for nearly 74 years. Jean and Gordon were most happy when they were with each other. Their’s was an epic love story indeed!
Jean was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life. She loved serving others and served in various callings. She always said that serving the children in Primary was her favorite!
Jean was a tireless worker! Her house and yard were always spotless. In her later years, she was often seen sweeping her porch, driveway and gutters thus receiving the sweet endearment of Broom Lady. She was also known for her style and good taste. She never left the house without her hair, makeup and outfit being just perfect. That always included lovely jewelry and lots of Bling!
Jean loved spending time with her family and friends. Bear Lake was a special place for her where she enjoyed spending time with her family and extended family. She and Gordon also enjoyed spending his retired years in St. George in the winter months. Everywhere she went, she made friends! She loved everyone and everyone loved her back! She enjoyed music, shopping, gardening, ceramics and just riding in the truck with Gordon. She always had a smile on her face and a giggle. She exuded joy and goodness that everyone recognized. She will be dearly missed!
Jean is survived by her 5 children; Gordon (Marsha), Scott ( Dorothy), Gary ( Barbara), Tami ( Craig), Brian (Shannon) and daughter-in-law Janet Wooten; 17 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and sister, Jone Smoot. She is preceded in death by her sweetheart Gordon, her parents Reed and Leah Hortin ; her 2 sisters; Merilyn McMillan and Ann Stringham.
Her family would like to thank her neighbors and the Holladay 25th Ward for keeping a watchful eye on her after Gordon passed. We’d also like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Crescent Senior Living and Memory Care who she loved dearly. And lastly, a sincere thank you to the doctors, nurses and hospice team at Alta View Hospital who cared for her with love and respect. Thank you for giving us that time and sacred space with her.
