Murray, UT
Wendy Deters Lewis, age 56, of Murray, Utah, completed her journey here on earth surrounded by her loving family on August 9, 2018 after a brief fight with Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer. She was born on May 5, 1962 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Hyrum and Renee Turnbow Deters.
Wendy was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, and graduated from West High School where she excelled on the swim team. Afterward, she trained as a dental assistant and spent her career in the dental field.
Wendy met the love of her life, Sanford Lewis, in school and they were married on August 19, 1983 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had two wonderful children, Ryan and Lauren, and loved raising them in Murray, Utah. Wendy dropped everything to spend time with her precious grandson, Ace. She loved being ”Nana Lew” and she couldn’t get enough of his smiles; singing and playing with him. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Primary - including Activity Days, Relief Society Presidency, Homemaking, and the Young Women program. She felt peace in the temple, and since January has visited every temple in Utah.
Wendy’s pure, selfless love was shared with everyone she met. She knew just how to make everyone feel special and cared for. She always put others first and had a sweet, humble spirit. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and built wonderful bonds with them. She could be found at every game, play, or activity that she could get to, not just for her own children, but for extended family and friends also. She always had a treat or activity planned to involve everyone in the fun. She loved animals and would share treats with hers and the neighbors’ dogs. Wendy would jump at any opportunity to go boating, water skiing, swimming, hiking, camping, and making caramel dumplings for the whole camp. She loved trips to St. George and sewing Halloween costumes for her family. Wendy was a great quilter and loved to quilt, but it wasn’t her passion - her family was.
She would do anything for her family, even if they casually commented they needed or wanted something, it became very important to her, she wanted it for them, and would make it happen. It often seemed like she understood and shared their thoughts. Life certainly won’t be the same without her, but we take great comfort in knowing what a sweet reunion she must be having in Heaven. Until then, we lean on the strong family ties she set before us, and her example to live each day making happy, loving memories with family and friends.
Survived by her loving husband, Sanford; two children, Ryan Lewis (Danielle Gulick), Lauren Lewis; grandson, Ace G. Lewis; father, Hyrum Deters; siblings, Melanie (Kevin) Pierce, Kurt (Terri) Deters, Bart (Melanie) Deters, Heidi (Andy) Wold, Bret (Camille) Deters.
Preceded in death by her mother, Renee Deters; a nephew, Jesse Pierce; and a sister-in-law, Charlene (Lewis) Oviatt.
